Ainge knows he cant give up everyone for a guy who might leave. Tatum is the guy he isnt parting with unless Davis extended and he wont
You aren't winning with Tatum. You aren't winning if AD walks.
So why not chance it? Hope that you somehow turn Tatum into an mvp/ stars want to come play with him? I'm not going to intellectualize or rationalize why Danny holding onto Tatum is the right thing to do. Cause it isn't, no matter how much convincing anyone attempts to do. Miss out on Davis, you made a mistake. Idc if it costs Tatum and if it's a one year rental. Tatum won't win an mvp. You need an mvp. You take that risk.
Could still be a negotiating tactic. But still. Not a good idea. It's the Kawhi thing all over again. The raptors did EXACTLY this, and it got them a title.

You dont chance it because Tatum is already good enough to fill the role as 3rd best player on a championship team and only has a great prognosis to be a solid player in this league.
Your other way leaves us empty of any stars and Danny cany be in a position where hes starting over. If anything, Irving burning him actually helps him see that you cant just trade everyone.
Also Danny is notoriously cheap when it comes to trades. He wins them big for a reason
Was Ainge cheap in the Walker trade?
Was he cheap in the 4 first rounders trade?
Was he cheap in the Irving trade?
He's won trades and lost trades in his time, and probably got very lucky a few offers were not accepted.
But one trade you never lose, EVER, is the one when you trade players that don't matter for an MVP level player.
Because nothing but MVP level players matter in the NBA.
