Trade for Baynes?

Post#1 » by DET_Athletics » Thu Jun 20, 2019 5:04 pm

Celtics trying to dump baynes 5.4 million dollar contract? Do you take the 14th overall pick and send a second round for him. We would basically forgo free agency, but would it be worth it? It would solve our backup center situation...

I would definitely take that deal but can’t see them using 14 to dump that small of a contract

They do have multiple draft picks, but might take some more compensation, maybe a pick swap of something.

I would have did Baynes and any of Boston's three 1sts for Robinson/#45 long before the Snell trade.

Cap wise with the addition of Snell, is something like 14 and Baynes for GR3 and 45 still possible?

We should or maybe already are attempting to bring Baynes back. We need a backup big like yesterday.

Wouldn't get 14, maybe something like Baynes and 22 for Robinson and 30 might make some sense...

Its possible, but with Baynes and the contract of #14 (or #20 or #22), that would only leave Detroit $5-6 mil under the luxury tax threshold.

I could easily be wrong myself, but I believe that as long as future years are in complete team control that player can be traded prior to the option decision deadline.

Team option are becoming more and more rare these days, as non guaranteed type years are replacing them.

Well ESPN knows more than me, so that settles it.

I do find it a bit odd that guys on rookie contracts, that have several team options can be traded anytime, and vet contracts with team options can't be.

That makes sense why teams are getting away from the options and going the un-guaranteed route more and more.

Can we absorb Baynes into our cap? If I remember correctly we are capped out and only have the MLE and BAE? Can we use that to acquire Baynes and a pick?

No. Depending on when we have to pick GRIIII option, we might be able to use his contract in a trade but I think we can't. Only TPE we have is Bullock's 2.5 mil, not enough for Baynes.

No the MLE and BAE can only be used to sign free agents.

Detroit does have a couple of traded player exceptions from Bullock and Stanley, but neither is large enough to absorb Baynes' contract, and I'm pretty sure they can't be combined.

I don't think it is possible for what the Celtics are trying to do. If they want to reduce their payroll, they can't take a player back. And the Pistons don't have room to absorb it. We would need a third party to make it happen.

So for those that think we should move on from Drummond, I'm sure we could do something like Drummond for Smart/Baynes/#14. We wouldn't have to re-sign Ish in this case. Not sure if Baynes could handle starter minutes.

I thought that GR3 had an "non-guaranteed" contract not a team option. If its a team option he can't be traded unless the option was picked up. If its an "non-guaranteed" contract he could be traded. I thought it was one of those contracts that, if waived by a certain date, he only gets a small amount of money for next season but it appears I was wrong and it is in fact a team option.

Trade machine is a mess right now IMO. There are many problems with it, I wish ESPN would realize how popular it is within a certain niche and build it out a bit more.
