Lakers buys #46 from Orlando and selects Talen Horton-Tucker
pros
- ultra young (won't turn 19 until Thanksgiving), may yet grow another inch
- 6'4", 240 lbs, 7'1" wingspan
- super chonky
- still crazy athletic
- apparently kawhi-sized hands
- decent handles, great PnR ball handler
- fantastic defender
- shot 70% at the rim (!!!)
cons
- klutch klient
- streaky shooter
- needs better shot selection
he reminds me of a shorter ron artest with a smoother shooting stroke, like how ron used to use his butt to move everyone out of the way. maybe a pj tucker comparison might be useful
no pelinka crazy ass story though

We need him for defense. He’s a good pickup i think.

Can he be used as bait to trade Mo to clear more cap room?

Re: Lakers buys #46 from Orlando and selects Talen Horton-Tucker
watched a few of these videos online of him.
when he can get into position and create spacing, he really relies on that length extension and release to his benefit.
fascinating to watch him do this
will be interesting to see him in SL if there

This bodes extremely well:
https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-top-50-nba-draft-prospects-according-to-our-carmelo-projections/
538s CARMELO stat ranked Talen as the prospect with the 3rd highest upside in the draft, behind Zion and Hayes. Comparisons are Ariza and Gerald Wallace.
When adjusting CARMELO with scout ranking Talen falls to 9th.

Re: Lakers buys #46 from Orlando and selects Talen Horton-Tucker
From BBall-reference:
G GS MP FG FGA FG% 2P 2PA 2P% 3P 3PA 3P% FT FTA FT%
35 34 27.2 4.4 10.9 .406 3.0 6.4 .475 1.4 4.5 .308 1.6 2.5 .625
ORB DRB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS
0.7 4.2 4.9 2.3 1.3 0.7 1.7 2.3 11.8
Couple things stick out to me:
A) .308 is not good 3-point shooting. 40% shooting aint great either.
B) He's close....but needs to get that FT% down a little if he wants to be a Laker.
C) Playing 27minutes, you'd like to see more than 12points, or 5 boards or 2 assists. Unless the guy is legit just a defensive specialist, you gotta wonder how much your gonna get out of the guy. College was easy, right? Now comes the big boys.
Are we in the mode to develop such young / raw player? I'll have to see him in action. If he's not on-point defensively, I don't see this as the right destination for him. Perhaps a trade is best for all.

ahh....well the numbers don't line up perfect...but you get the idea.
Kid does have a 1.7 defensive win share. Maybe someone who speaks gobbly-gook can translate? Is that good?

Klutch Klient as a con seems ridiculous!

Re: Lakers buys #46 from Orlando and selects Talen Horton-Tucker
Anyone getting vibes of rich man's Iman shumpert/Marcus smart? but with tons of upside at age 18.
Not saying he's these guys, but he gives me flashes of tyreke evans, Marcus smart, Kawhi, metta, pj tucker, and maybe draymond. Also his body type reminds me of shannon brown but without the crazy hops and with a ton more game.

^also those impressions are from highlight scouting, which is the worst thing to do. Can't wait to see if those highlights translate in summer league.

I don't understand, why you need draft pics if you don't have any in the draft.
I mean don't we/lakers have a G-league and already developing players to be NBA ready etc?
Never understood that. why can't we bring players up from G-league?

because players in G-league are 2nd or 3rd tier talent, you can develop all you want but if you don't have the talent then it's a waste of time.
