Because you don’t want a team above you to work him out and pick him? But what incentive is that for the player. He should want to go as high as possible.

I thought your point was they don’t have a cap hold? If your plan is to sign other free agents with the cap space, then sign the 2nds (going over the cap) you’re running into the same issue. It’s why they had to trade Holmes last year so they would have cap space to sign Bolden.
It's still cheap labor for two years. We're going to have a ton of minimum roster holds that equal out to a 2nd rounder's first year salary. I still don't understand why a Terence Davis on a two year deal is not a better use of resources when it doesn't impact our space at all. Especially since we can't even afford veteran minimums at all of these extra spots.

You can go over the cap to sign people to vet minimums. Did it with Amir last year. I assume they will try to get someone either this summer or keep it open for a buyout.
I would have preferred they go that route with a 2nd draft pick, but I get their line of thinking. They already have 4 guys they consider developing plus 2 2 way guys. For comparison the Raptors did not have a single rookie on their team and OG is the only real “development” guy on their roster.

I'm more talking about the apron. If they use the MLE, they won't have room under the apron to add 5 guys at 1.6 each. And that doesn't include the problem of actually finding 5 vets worth having on your roster that are willing to take the minimum. Conversely, if you kept two of the second rounders, you'd be getting two players for the price of one vet and only relying on finding three rosterable minimum veteran guys. And having six developing guys still leaves you with 9 veterans (i.e., a complete playoff rotation) even assuming literally no minutes for any of Zhaire/Bolden/Thybulle/Shake/2nd rounder/2nd rounder.
It's not that I don't understand their line of thinking. It's more that I'm troubled that they are unable to see why it is obviously not the most optimal preferred course.

Not sure how you can project how far under the apron they are until you see the contracts they sign people to.

We've run the calculations a 1000 times. If you assume they bring back Butler (max), Harris (max), Redick (somewhere between 9 and 12 first year) and Scott (somewhere between 3 and 5), the apron is going to be a real issue.
Now maybe they don't end up bringing back one of Harris or Butler or Redick or Scott or don't use the MLE. But that's just compounding our problems and being even more dependent on the seemingly endless supply of quality veteran minimum players that they seem to think are out there.

Sure but there’s also permutations where they can stay under. Redick and Scott taking the lower end of your projection for example. Splitting up the mid level with two guys.
I assume they have a plan on how they are using the money. Like I’m sure they’ve discussed numbers with JJ. Judging it now not even halfway through doesn’t seem right.

smittybanton wrote:apparently the issue of cheap veterans has broached the draft evaluation thread. here's a small list i compiled off the top of my head back when examining the clippers chances of building a super team:
"...With a solid starting five, the Clippers will be very attractive to ring chasers willing to take the veteran's minimum to play for a championship in LA: Oldheads like Vince Carter, DeAndre Jordan, Tony Parker, Rajon Rondo, Iman Shumpert, etc. Austin Rivers, Gerald Green, Noah Vonleh, Ed Davis. The Clips could resign a couple of their own guys like Wilson Chandler, Garrett Temple, Jamychal Green. There are even a few young players with some potential left who might be looking for an opportunity, like Stanley Johnson or Mario Hezonja...."
with a little more thought today, i would add kyle oquinn, taj gibson, frank kaminsky, robin lopez
a roster by roster search would reveal some more, im sure.
plus there would also be vets who do not sign over the summer, preferring to wait until the spring to sign with a contendor, i.e., "the robert horry plan". there will also be the veteran buyout market.
how nice would it be to have wilson chandler as the 13th man instead of our starting four?
go, elton. it's your birthday....
