I am a little hesitant to pay Russell but if we can get rid of Wiggins and replace his contract with Russells I would be fine with it. Russell being one of Karls best friends is huge IMO. We wont get another player like Karl for a while. But I guess if we dont get Russell we just wait for someone who wants to sign in Minnesota and hopefully Karl doesnt leave by then.

I think it is okay to sign Russell and give Wiggins another season. He will be much easier to trade next offseason for teams looking to start their rebuilds while maximizing their rookie contract cap space.

Not comparing these four players talent-wise, and haven't watched Russell play much, but something about the combo of DLo & Kat reminds me of the Steph/KG pairing.

Can we play Karl like a wing on offense and let WCS play perimeter defense? Just throwing out thoughts of a sign and trade where we swap out either Dieng or Teague for a lower priced WCS.

Lower priced? I bet he wants more than 25mil/yr

Stein wants 25 mil+ per year????

That has to be pretty close to the Max for him. I don’t think there’s any way he gets that much.

I think WCS and his agent will start around these numbers, but final deal will be close to Capella deal.

He's not as good as Horford or Capela. He'll get under 20

He'll probably get $12-20 million, so if acquiring him is for cap-saving purposes, there are much better options out there.

Randle is a way better option that WCS.
Not even close.

Two things have stood out from what Rosas has said since taking over this job:
1. You win in this league with star players.
2. This is going to be a developmental program.

Now you can debate if you feel Russell is a star or not, but judging by all the smoke coming from Mayo Clinic Square, it sure feels like the Timberwolves believe Russell can be a star player on a winning team.

As for the developmental part, this is where the fears about having not much behind Towns and Russell can hopefully be calmed if that's what we want to do. The Rockets and Nets make a living of finding undervalued pieces and plugging them into their culture and developing them into rotational pieces on a playoff team. It hurts to trade away established role players, but that's where the confidence in the developmental program comes in.

What would I trade to get Russell? Covington and Culver are two of the last pieces I consider trading this summer, but I trade Covington before I trade Culver if one has to go. Again, it goes back to the development program.

The part about finding undervalued pieces: Dlo and Harden have something in common, they are very high usage guards. Obviously Harden USG% is one of the highest the league has seen, and do so with tremendous efficency (Im not trying to argue Dlo will be at that level at some point), but my takeaway is: both teams put the ball in the hands of the best decision maker and use less talented offensive guys as finishers. That allows them to find very specific skillsets instead of all around players.

One of the writers over on CH has broken it down where basically the Wolves could get DLo in a 3 team deal using just Teague, Okogie (and maybe KDB) along with a first.

Basically Wolves get DLo
Nets get the 1st
Knicks take on Teagues expiring with Okogie (and maybe KDB).

With the % difference you’re allowed in trades that would be enough for a near max (or Max if you include KDB). Nets take back no salary while getting an asset. Knicks get an asset for paying for Teagues last year.

IMO - I’d rather keep Okogie (and draft a PG next year) while not signing DLo to a (near?) max deal but that is the easiest path and would allow us to retain our rights on Tyus and Taj.

FWIW.

Teague, Okoge, and a 1rst for DLo? DONE! I like Okoge, and his hustle is great, but unless his 3pt shot is vastly improved and consistent, I don't seem him as more than a 6th or 7th man - albeit a very good one.

My question is with that trade, do we still have our MLE and other cap holds?

As far as I know, yes, but I am no capologist. Maybe shrink (or someone else who follows those nuances closer) can step in and fill us in on those details.

Yeah, it should be no problem to keep those holds, as far as I know

Cap holds, for sure. MLE will be available but there will be concerns about the tax line if we want use all of it and also bring guys back for more than minimums. Not only this season, but the next, since Teague expiring (which would drop us far below) would be replaced by Dlo contract long term. We could need to dump Dieng expiring next season to stay below if we use the MLE and bring back guys on multi year deals (Tyus, Deng, Taj).

I get that line of thinking and I also believe that Covington would get a greater return than Culver from a team looking to win now. Covington is a better player than Culver and right now it is probably not even close. The hope is in 3 years or so Culver becomes a better player than Covington.

This seems rather cheap. My question is do the Nets even get a first in this deal? My thoughts are they are either going to withdraw the qualifying offer to Russell bc they are signing two max guys or they are going to simply keep Russell. If they rescind the QO, do they have leverage to get a first vs a couple seconds. I believe in a sign and trade like this they would get a massive trade exception as well, right?
