Pistons sign Oregon's Louis King to a two-way contract

Louis King’s pro career will begin with the Detroit Pistons.

The former Oregon small forward, who went undrafted, signed a two-way contract with Detroit, according to The Athletic and Stadium’s Shams Charania.

A Pac-12 all-freshman team honoree, King averaged 13.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, including 14.5 points and 6.2 rebounds in Pac-12 play, in 31 games with 28 starts freshman last season.

King suffered a torn meniscus during his senior year of high school and minor injuries to his right hand and left ankle while at UO.

“Lou really finished the season strong for us as he regained his strength," Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “His shooting ability and skill level really had a lot of teams interested in him.”

He went undrafted on Thursday - but there is talent there.

Freshman King was a former five-star recruit and became Oregon’s third ever one-and-done when he left for the draft. King’s draft stock certainly climbed through Oregon’s run in the Pac-12 and NCAA Tournaments after scoring in double-figures in each game and being named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament team. In seven postseason games, he averaged 16.4 points per game on 50 percent shooting, including an impressive 61.1 percent from beyond the arc.

The Ducks’ leading scorer has NBA potential and was told by his agent to prepare to be drafted in the 15-40 range. The 6-9, 200-pound forward is a prospect with the potential to be a force on both ends of the floor. King is able to play positionless ball and develop into a two-way player. His power forward size, tenacious defense and perimeter skill set make him an attractive pick up for a team.

It remains to be seen which team or if there will be a team that sees the upside on King. He would be a project; the wing needs to develop his post moves so that he can take advantage of mismatches on smaller or weaker defenders at the next level. His three-point shooting and dribbling must continue to improve and develop to space the floor. NBA teams will want to see him get stronger and put on more weight.

Along with King, teammate Kenny Wotten came out and went undrafted as well, and we all saw the Bol Bol slide - seems like somebody close to the Oregon program is feeding these young men bad information.

Lol, all these projects and young guys making us look like we're rebuilding.

But this is a potentially a good pick up. Wings and long guys are a luxury and we should try and get all of them since that's arguably our need besides a backup PG & Center

I actually wanted King in the second round! He’s an excellent pickup to take a flyer on.

Young? Check.
Explosive? Check
Good 3pt%? Check
Good ft%? Check
Good size? Check

I really don’t understand why he wasn’t drafted.

I wanted him with 45 originally so I’m happy. Thought he was getting a bit underrated and looked solid whenever I watched him

Those vids are truer to a scouting video. They are honest.

I posted one of Bone from the same source.

King has tremendous upside. He can already shoot. Plays defense and knows how to play defense.

He made a nice assist off the bounce. 7 foot wingspan.

He’d be a sophomore in college.

I thought King would go first. Sticking to my big board range for him 15-25 in this class. Maybe better

Wow -dude needs to fire that agent that told him he could go #15.

This is exactly the type of guy you want to take a flier on with a 2way though. I was prepared for us to sign some 5th year senior who was "ready to contribute". The odds of him panning out are pretty low, but at least if he actually has real upside.

Well at least Ed is signing the right kind of players to 2 way contracts this time. Even if this kid never pans out, this is a much better signing than 30 year old Kalin Lucas.

Question is, does he play defense or just knows how to play defense. 8-)

Seriously, it appears that he can shoot from outside fairly well and he was injured part of his freshman season. He could develop into a hidden gem, so I can see why Management pounced on him quickly.

What does this mean for the Lithuanian kid? Do we have anymore 2way spots available for him?

Straight up G-League contract or stay in Europe.

Forgive my ignorance, but if he signs a straight Gleague deal do we still keep his NBA rights?

Yes. It would be as if he signed with any other league outside of the NBA. It's a pure draft and stash. A 2-way contract I think is an official NBA contract and means he'd be an RFA at the end of it.

2-way contracts can earn upwards of $500K if the player is with the NBA team the maximum allowed time. Straight G-League contracts are <$100K, I think around 70K after a recent minimum bump.
