I expect us to sign him just because we'll need to fill a roster spot for cheap. Don't expect anything though from a guy that didn't pop in college until age 23.

nice. i also like the james ennis comp. i think shayock could possibly have a better handle. i think his upsides is Luol Deng. lowside, jordan mcrae.
i pretty sure they won't but i wish we'd run shake, zhaire, thybulle, mayock and bolden as the primary unit in vegas.

Re: Welcome Marial Shayok!
Shayok's low number of steals and blocks stood out to me when I started researching him. Seemed very low for a guy with his length. But I went back and checked Malcolm Brogdon's stat line and found he had nearly the identical numbers to Shayok. Maybe it's something in Virginia's system that lends itself to low blocks and steals. DeAndre Hunter, who is a terrific defender, also has low steals and blocks. Never noticed so many 6'11+ wingspan guys with low numbers in both categories.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

That's definitely true, however it's important to note that Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, and Isaiah Wilkins have had success generating steals in that defense. But on a team with that impressive of a defensive resume, you're right, steals aren't the end all be all.

Yeah there's definitely something about the scheme in Virginia that depresses those numbers. Part of it is likely the slow pace which cuts down the number of possessions per game. Not sure what else though.
That was the exact reason I was not a fan of Brogdon coming out. Usually you can use those block and especially steal stats to eliminate prospects as a first pass.

Yeah, I'm sure it's due to Pace. Can't block or steal the ball if the other team never has the ball... It's just strange to see multiple NBA prospects with such low numbers in both categories.

You gotta keep in mind that he was only playing 16 minutes a game at Virginia. His deflection percentages were excellent.
2.3 steal, 1.9 block
His defense disappeared at Iowa State as he became more of a creater/scorer, though.

I'd like to see a birth certificate, looks like he's about the same age as Thon Maker.

I didn't watch much CBB this year but he reminds me of Jordan McRae in that he certainly looks the part of an NBA scorer but is an empty calories guy who really is useless without getting shots up but not efficient enough to warrant volume shot taking. Don't have any expectation he makes the team. But I can understand swinging on the guy late in the draft.

Apparently he doesn't have the energy to go full speed on both ends of the court. Played in the defense-centric UVA squad but then became an offensive focal point after transferring. After transferring, he didn't have so much defensive impact. He'd obviously have a very different role here - we'll have to see whether he can fill a role well enough to play (or even make the roster).

McRae's stroke and shooting were horrible compared to Shayock
McRae: 42% 2 - 34% 3 - 77% FT
Shayok: 50% 2 - 39% 3 - 88% FT
Those two aren't even close in terms of offensive scoring and consistency. McRae was much more athletic and relied upon that.

34 points against Tacko Fall and Co the other night.
Shayok can flat out score. Such a smooth, calm strut to his game. Hoping we sign him to a Bolden-like multiyear deal after this season. I think many are overlooking him as a bargain contributor going forward.

Reminds me of Joe Ingles. Not athletic, but a smooth scoring game.

Got to wonder what a little spacing would do for our big roster.

Re: Welcome Marial Shayok!
It would help. I'd be more excited about having a wing who can drive and create his own shot from mid-range and beyond. He's also adept at both catch-and-shoot and pulling up off the dribble.rzzzzz wrote:ankle420breaker wrote:Shotgun went for 42 last night.

There's layers to his game that no other player on the roster has.

Brett Brown just doesn't know any better, can't fault him. He can't do better when he lacks coaching talent.
