RJ won’t be Timmy simply due to the fact that he’s a much better playmaker/passer/rebounder

Projections wise, if we strike out in FA, I could see RJ scoring an inefficient 18-19 ppg, ~5 rpg, and ~4apg

Thinking < 2.5 turnovers a game, > 5 Fta a game, 3pt shooting >35%

It’ll be hella successful season for him

This could be. Then half this board would say he's a bust and trade him fast for another team's retread. The other half will say he's done great for a rookie and give him time to grow, because even [name your star here] wasn't a star as a rookie.

That's just how it goes around here.

RJ's game should transition well into the league. He needs to up his FT shooting % as well as his numbers from behind the arc.

What will really help him is the spacing on the floor as well as the 3 second rule in the paint. Opposing defenses could pack the paint on that Duke team since nobody was a good shooter from behind the arc.

If he gets his FT #'s up to around 73-75% and his 3 pt shooting to around the league average, he'll be very productive on the offensive end. I just don't want to see him being one dimensional ala Knox. Barrett has an NBA body at 19 already (looks much stronger than Knox,) and hopefully with proper weight training and S&C he can turn into a good defensive player as well.

He's also a good rebounder for his size and his playmaking ability is there when he decides to look for other players. 22/8/4 is a very impressive stat line for any college player let alone a freshman at a blue chip program such as Duke.

Work ethics and such.

True, we need some vets in that locker room, and vets who can legitimately ball, no Lance Thomasses.

I'm not the biggest Millsap fan but some combination of Malcom Brogdon, Danny Green, Thad Young and Paul Millsap (not all four obviously) would be good for our young players. Maybe two of them, or even just one.

This sounds reasonable, but we would need to make sure to keep Mills the hell away from the contracts. A short term contract that expires in a year or two, when there are better FA's available, would be just fine.

We can't develop this team while tanking, so we're going to finish the season around the 7th to 10th, if we don't get a marquee free agent. We might finish one or two places higher with one of the guys you mentioned, but they'd be very valuable for the kids. So let's see if Perry can keep impressing.

Or else just spend $120M to get TH Jr. back from the Mavs.

yes, that is kinda crazy. lol. you can't pass on zion.

but i don't think it's crazy to believe RJ will be a better pro. i think there are a lot of factors that could contribute to that. zion is under a lot of undue pressure to be this transformative figure in the league. i kinda feel for him. RJ is going to a bad team and may be asked to produce. expectations aren't that high from outside. he's probably going to be the hardest on himself, which i think is great.

i think RJ will contend for ROY. but i think all 3 of the first few picks will. there are some guys who went later who i really like, but i don't think they'll be carrying the weight the first three picks will. zion might end up with the lightest load depending on how NO's offseason goes. they seem to want vets and to push forward with jrue. commendable but iono

I love Zion and obviously I would’ve been excited but his body frame and style of play worries me. Hopefully he has Lebron type longevity tho.

same. zion's body inherently concerns me. if it holds up, i don't see why he wouldn't be an unstoppable force. that jumper comes along and it's OVER. he and giannis battle on monster island.

i think he'll be plenty awesome even with an inconsistent jumper like lebron.

It's funny, before the college season even started I thought RJ would be the better fit for us than Zion. In the last 40 years some of the best players in the game have been playmaking wings or a really tall PG like Magic. Health isn't my biggest concern when it comes to Zion. I worry that he's going to develop into a small ball 5 and not a wing player. Not being able to create off the dribble from the perimeter will really cap his ceiling.

small ball 5 def in his future. i see him firmly as a 4 to start. i think his handle is fine, but he's more of a weapon on the break and down low in the halfcourt. i guess the question is, who can stop him as a roll man? so much action begins there, and i think he'd excel in that game. and i think he can make good reads and passes if the scoring option isn't there off the p/r.

i agree that i don't see him as a wing/3 man in any way. i see more of a blake griffin role for him.
RIP magnumt

thanks for everything, thibs.

We can only hope he has a career like Tony had.

What? If he has a career like him I will be disappointed. Dude has a much higher ceiling than Campbell.

Yeah, that was a really head scratching comment. Campbell's 2 best years came when he was playing for an expansion team. somebody had to get buckets.

So will every other team. All players come from somewhere and don’t necessarily want to play for their hometown team.

Fixed.

He seems to have the drive so his approach to team basketball will ultimately determine how good he will be.

I’m intrigued bno, you’re usually highly against inefficient players but I’ve been seeing you sing praises of RJ, what gives?

he'll be like gallinari, shoot poorly but gets to the line a lot so he makes up for it.

so we'll see a lot of 5 for 12 nights, but 6-10 free throw attempts so he'll accumulate a lot of points

vs

8 for 19, and barely attacking the free throw line.

you know exactly what i mean.

you can only shoot 13 times and get 20+ if you're constantly living at the line.

I know what you mean. I'm not exactly disagreeing. I just think we're going to see a lot more attempts from RJ a game, even with his potential FT shooting.
