Frank needs to play SL. I give him a lot of slack because he's still young. But that also means you gotta put more time in the development process including summer leagues.

At the end of the day, I concede VSL isn't typically vital for a 3rd year player. But speaking of Frank specifically, quite frankly, he needs reps. He regressed from year 1 to year 2. He didn't play a enough games or minutes last season due to injury and ineffectiveness. He has been working out this summer away from the team. And he appears to be falling out of favor with management. All those things considered, it would have been good to get a peek at his current stage of development. He wasn't interested and prioritized FIBA solely over participating in both. Cool.

But if he doesn't show much improvement this upcoming season, or even regresses, it's just setting the stage for his doubters to question his commitment.

If the Knicks chose not to let their players participate every one of you would cry about it.

I barely watch it. If the Knicks held out their players I couldn’t care less, it’s the summer I’ll find something else to do.

If SL meant so much how come all the MVPs amount to nothing? Or why no one is signed to play meaningful NBA minutes

Heavily scouted lol.

Isn't that how Trier got his contract last year?

No. Trier was signed to his deal before SL.

Summer League is scouted, but I think we're vastly overrating the level of scouting that takes place. GM's are there to talk to each other and scouts are there to find players for D-League teams mostly. Every now and then there is a player who breaks through, but that is true of any situation.

The scouting presence is not solely there to find diamonds in the rough though. There's also a contingent of front office execs and scouts there to monitor players and their season-to-season development. Which is the context for a player in Frank's situation, who lacks reps and has been a bit of an enigma.

Summer league is nonsense, i don't know why people put so much into it.

If it was such nonsense it wouldn’t be heavily promoted by the NBA, heavily televised, earning revenue via sponsors, and heavy fan interest.

Just admit it. Frank is fully able to play in VSL if he wanted to. His FIBA schedule is not the reason why he isn’t going.

Its nonsense because most nba teams keep out 2 year players and even less allow third year players. Its a glorified pickup game, its also one of the few times where tickets are affordable. As for broadcasts, its all about the new lottery picks and the nba just creating content year around, not because it is important.

But damn, imagine if Frank plays in SL and actually doesn’t have a good showing.
I’ll say this tho, unless a trade that makes real sense comes up with Frank as a part of it, or our (stupid) maxcat dreams need some salary trimming, I see and am cool with Frank starting the season here with us.
Maybe this year he makes a jump. Defensively he can be big with the offensive minded kids we have. But Frank, you gotta step it up lil’ bruh.

The kids need court time, you can practice all you want but real live action is different. He’s need to play and if I’m the Knicks I make him play

Summer league is tough on guards. There’s always a bunch of 5’10 muffagahs going 100mph on every play. Picking everyone up full court. It’s exhausting watching it.

Aren't there "reps" to be had playing with the French national team?

If you want to showcase a team oriented defensive guard, summer league is thenworst place to put him. Let him play in organized games. Honestly what is the obsession with summer leage for non rookies?

And it's the only reason Frank', so far, is in the extended list for the World Cup.
Vincent Collet (coach of the French team) said during the press conferennce that Frank may be in the final list to block Dennis Shroeder because he killes us last competition at 1/4 final, we need a PG stopper !
Are you guys really wondering if it's better for him to play with Nande de Colo, Fournier, Batum, Gobert than average selfish player who wanna shine ??
C'mon ...

So, it turrns out France have quite an interesting draw for the FIBA 2019 Championship. They are currently ranked third (behind USA and Spain and just in front of Serbia).

The format is: First round: 8 groups of 4, all play all once - top two qualify. Second round: 4 groups of 4, all play all once - top two qualify. Then a single-game knock out stage: quarters, semis and final.

A wrinkle is that the top two teams in each group go into the same group in round two and their game carries forward.

In the first round France have Dominican Republic, Germany and Jordan. In principle the DR could start KAT and Al Horford which would make for interesting game planning issues for France, but I don't know if either or both intend to play. The other two games should be straight-forward.

Assuming they win that group (or come second) they enter a group with the top two of Lithuania, Canada, Australia and Senegal. Lithuania is the highest ranked, but how that plays out will depend on which NBA players Canada and Australia can put on the floor. (Canada could of course feature RJ & Iggy.)

Overall I would expect France to win this group - they should come in with one game won from the first round.

If they do win the group they would be likely to face one of Turkey, Greece, Czech Republic or (my dark horse) Brazil in the quarter finals. And should win. That would leave them most likely to meet one of either Spain or Serbia in the semifinals and USA in the final (if they win the semi - which is clearly going to be a tough game).

If they come second in the group they would be likely to face USA in the quarters. And lose.

But a reasonable number of those games should be competitive and, if he gets minutes, good experience for Frank.

Thx !
Germany in the group is the reason why Frank is here exactly ! I doubt KAT and Horford will join the team, it was just a way to tease i guess!
Frank can fot so well in this type of bball, Collet had him in Strasbourg before NYC and he will have a role defined in this team which will be a solid base to let him developp during the competition and reach the top in the final vs USA !
France has enough shooters with De Colo, Heurtel, Fournier, Batum to not give big offenseive responsabilities to Frank when he's on the court, but the key will be how he reacts when he has to step it up offensively and show what he's supposed to show : a player who put a basketball in a hoop consistentaly

Frank needs to turn into Klay Thompson-lite. Don't worry about dribbling. Perfect the 3-ball and defend. Don't worry about anything else.

The point is we WANT to see Frank in an environment where he has big offensive responsibilities on the court. We would like to gauge if he has or will be able to develop that area of his game. Which is why some of us were looking forward to seeing him in Vegas Summer League with the ball in his hands and looking to be aggressive.

Why would we want to see Frank standing in the corner in FIBA not doing anything offensively and focusing on defense primarily? How is that development? We have seen two years of that and it’s quite frustrating, obviously. Which is why so many are down on him. Especially since he doesn’t convert the few looks he receives parked in the corner.

i don't think there's one right answer to this.

I see all the arguments and each point is valid.

I'd be surprised to see Knox, Mitch, Zo play more than 2 games. Then again, I don't think they really need SL outside of just playing in pickup bball for a couple games.

Well at least he'll be playing basketball this summer so that's a good thing.

I would like to see him build chemistry with our other young guys on the SL roster. Him playing with a bunch of savvy veterans on the French national team isn't a bad consolation prize whatsoever, as long as he's getting ample opportunity to play.

I absolutely understand your point, but on the balance you have :

- SL : a place where a bunch of people don't care abt him, it's a big chance for them to show what they can do : it's the JUNGLE ! No Defense, no IQ bball on the floor and just a bunch of guys doing iso !
Where you think Frank can have fun and progress in this type of bball ??

- World Cup : a place where a bunch of people care about A GOAL, where everybody has a role and has to work on each little piece of the game to try to make it as perfect as it can be in only 2 month of prep !
Let the basketball common sense come to Frank, by earning his spot in the final roster his confidence will be increasing, and then by playing def efficiently (without 3 fouls in 3min) he'll have opportunities to be the player he needs to be offensively.

At the end of the day, you have a WAY bigger ceiling by shinning in an international competition than playing garbage bball in the US !
He's a competitor, he'll go to the World Cup because it's the smartest choice, and it's where he'll face the biggest challenge !
