Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
This season, no half measures.
Wipe the slate.
Do away with as much of the old regime as possible in July.
Biyombo, Monk, Frank, Williams, Kidd Gilchrist -
Hit the reset button.
They have young athletes, get up and down the floor.
Be physical. Scrap.
Find some emotional leaders, acquire them. Emotions are what makes family. It makes them want to fight for each other.
Then turn them loose, them against the world. No lame ducks, no one that doesn’t want to be there.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
If Kemba leaves I see no reason to use an asset like Monk to dump other players. If I were Mitch I'd send Marvin to a veteran team, try to get a 2nd for MKG, and just waive Biyombo. We then wait out Batum and try to find a good landing spot for Zeller next summer.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
If the Hornets want to win now, they can start by upgrading the center position.
The best free agent center is Vucevic. I’m sure Kemba would appreciate it if the front office made moves to upgrade the talent around him.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
All of you saying that we need to play the young guys, and get rid of all of Batum, MKG, Marv, Cody, and Biyombo... just how would you do that? No team is just taking our contracts for nothing. If we get rid of them, we have to take back contracts just as bad, or send out picks or the very young guns that you want to play.
Honestly, I think Mitch is just riding it out. He'll try to make deals, but no one is taking those players for nothing. TJ Warren got traded for nothing, and he's young and useful. Mitch is going to try and fit Kemba in the space we have, let Lamb and Frank walk, sign a minimum guy for backup pg/sg for depth (for argument's sake, let's just put JLin in there for now). He's going to be content in letting the expiring guys expire. And if Kemba isn't on board, then I think Mitch says thank you for your service.
Next year, we have Marv/MKG/Biyombo off the books. In two, we have Cody and Batum off. And all we have left is the young guns. It seems better to do that, than to try and save one year of salary by packaging our future firsts. Especially since we won't be winning titles in that time, so our picks might be valuable.
When is the tax calculated? I wonder if we can re-sign Kemba going over the tax, but then say trade MKG or Marv to a contender half way through the year and get under... do we get charged the tax based on the beginning or end of the year, or based on the percentage of time we were over the tax. I think the salary floor designation was done at the end of year payroll, but not sure about the tax.

You guys ready to attach a first-round pick to Nic in the next couple of weeks to a team with cap space?

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
There are ways.
A sign and trade with Orlando
Monk and Biyombo (or Williams) for Vucevic
Rescend Kaminsky
Kidd Gilchrist at 12 is an easier dump.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Tax penalties are calculated at the end of the season, there is no rush to make sure the team will be under the tax after Kemba's new deal kicks in. Mitch can comfortably wait for teams to strike out in free agency before he dumps salary, it won't cost MJ a dime.
The expectation that MJ is so cheap he isn't even willing to be in the tax almost a year before it would cost him anything is nonsensical.

Or
Trade:
Gilchrist, Williams, Biyombo, and Monk
For
Whiteside and Ryan Anderson
Waive Parker. Rescend Frank.
There are ways to allow the players of the new regime to play and shore up roster imbalances.
Kemba would appreciate roster balancing talent upgrades.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Mitch has all summer and all the way to to the deadline to get the team under the tax line. It would be nice if Spencer or Bonnell would mention that fact.

SG: Batum
PG: Graham
Unless MKG dominates training camp I doubt he'll be starting, he might not even be on the team come the season opener. I think it's a safe bet that Bridges will come out of training camp as a starter and I think Bacon might as well.
PG: Kemba
SG: Bacon
SF: Bridges
PF: Williams
C: Zeller
If Kemba leaves who knows what our starting lineup will be. I think we would trade for a stopgap guy like Schroder, but I wouldn't be surprised if Mitch wants to see if Monk is worth investing in or not by giving him a chance.
I definitely see Batum starting to begin the season. As the last three years attest, it doesn't matter how he plays. He still starts a lot of games.

His response is pretty dumb. There will be a market for the pick, no one is bidding more to do this now than they would at the deadline.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Does anyone know what the implications are if you are over the tax July 2nd 2019 vs say February 2020 or July 1st 2020? Like is it "you go over one day and you pay the full lux tax" or is it a % of the time you're over or what? I would imagine it is based on the amount of days you're over the tax. The issue is, how are we supposed to make these choices without knowing if Kemba will sign or not? I would think the plan is to get Kemba's deal done and assuming it actually gets done, look at the numbers and then figure out how to deal with the tax. Nobody is making a short term wing it decision just to save on the tax for a few days. That would be malpractice, impatient and foolish.
Isn't there also a way for Kemba to sign a deal that has a lower base in 19-20 to help us avoid the tax but he gets it back in subsequent years?
People also forget that if this team continues to strike out and suck even after re-signing Kemba, I highly doubt we won't find anyone who would take him in a trade.
All that being said, Zeller has value. MKG has some value. Marvin definitely has value for a contending team. I think if we have to move one of those contracts we'll move them without attaching a major asset. If we are able to get off of Batum and have to give up a future heavily protected first, that's something to consider as well.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
So, we need to dump 1 or 2 of MKG,Nic,Marv or Biz.
Marv is the easiest IMO, he can actually be useful and doesn't make that much. MKG is next, he can be useful for a few teams probably. Nobody is taking Biz and Nic will need a first to dump.
Most likely is MKG/Marv, we did just draft 3 wings/bigs. Offer them to Kings and Knicks and then trade the Dwight exception for a backup for Miles.

Re: 2019 Offseason Thread
Officially signing Kemba will likely be one of the last moves made, by then they'll have a verbal commitment. And as has been said, you don't go into the tax "for 1 second," it's a year-end calculation. Odd commentary on this.fatlever wrote:?s=19

That's 100% backwards. It's easier to trade expiring contracts after teams have swung and missed in F.A. The only pressure point is that you'll be trading out of the tax v. trading before you enter the tax. But from the receiving team's perspective, that shouldn't make much of a difference.
I think the bigger issue is that the new F.O. doesn't want to pay for the former's mistakes in terms of what it might take to trade some of those contract.
