Underrated Defensive Guards?

Post#1 » by nzahir » Thu Jun 27, 2019 8:21 pm

Who are some of the most underrated defensive guards in the league (preferably FA's)?

Not the guys we know such as Pat Bev, Jrue, Smart. But some more hidden names. Numbers to back it up would be nice

Rubio's always been very good on defense - but I feel he's in the widely known group. Tyus Jones has rated well on D the last few years (especially 2017-8 though those +/- numbers are probably a fluke to some degree). Delon Wright is a solid defender, but more of a SG.

You'd never know it by the fact that he's played about 6 career minutes, but defence is one thing Dante Exum is really good at. (Not FA any time soon though.)

not sure if he falls under the guard category but Gary Harris was an absolute pest in the postseason, particularly that Blazer series

I think the opposite. He has sucked for a long time.

It looks like he has gotten worse, off ball not great

It seems like not too many defensive guards or even sf's out there this FA. Danny Green is one, but I feel like he stays in TOR if Kawhi stays

Ariza's numbers were awful last season but I didn't watch him

Steph Curry and James Harden (NOT meant sarcastically).

In another thread, I posted the Synergy Sports playtype defensive stats from NBA.com for Harden this past season:
Post up: 90th percentile (20% of possessions)
Isolation: 71st percentile (15% of possessions)
PnR ballhandler: 75th percentile (14% of possessions)
PnR roll man: 81.6th percentile (2.6% of possessions)
Spot up shooter: 52nd percentile (30% of possessions)
Off screen: 79th percentile (5% of possessions)
Off handoff: 96th pecentile (5% of possessions)

I just looked up Curry's numbers, and they are more pedestrian, but still above average across the board:
Post up: 53.4th percentile (6% of possessions)
Isolation: 59th percentile (9.6% of possessions)
PnR ballhandler: 52nd percentile (32% of possessions)
PnR roll man: 75.5th percentile (2.4% of possessions)
Spot up shooter: 72nd percentile (29.3% of possessions)
Off screen: 51st percentile (5.4% of possessions)
Off handoff: 57th pecentile (11.3% of possessions)

Both guys are routinely lambasted for not playing defense, hence they are underrated.
Just because it happened to you, doesn't make it interesting.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Yesterday I was lying; today I'm telling the truth.

Terrence Ross was underrated this year defensively. He kept the Magic in games on both sides of the ball. Always getting up into the opponent and was constantly tipping the ball loose or out of bounds. A very pesky defender.

Also, an even more underrated defensive guard, Iwundu. He was fantastic last season off the bench on the defensive side of the ball while constantly hustling. Those are the only reasons he was even in the rotation.
God. Family. Country. Basketball.

Josh Richardson, though he does play a lot of minutes at the three.

Dejounte Murray might be the best defensive PG in the league if he comes back 100% and has been completely forgotten.

Numbers to back it up would be nice

#1 PG DRPM in 2018, +3.60.

No PG has gotten higher than +2.2 since 2015.

Josh Okogie for sure. The game he had against Harden in Minnesota last season was one of the best games I've ever been to.
