Not saying he’s bad, but the elite shut down guy that he has a reputation for was no where to be seen in my opinion. Not sure if my expectations were too high based on reading what a defensive presence he was, or he’s just made business decisions to ramp down his D at this point in his career.

Philly plays a switching defense, the guy with the ball can choose to get Butler or Simmons switched off him for a more favorable defensive player which makes a huge difference and gives Butler less time against the guy with the ball. I'm used to seeing Butler trying to stick to his man, fighting through picks and making his man work, with Philly, not much of that at all, just take your switch and like it.

Spoiler:
To me, it seemed like he had a number of defensive plays most players don't make.

And there's so much people miss like Butler knowing where to be and blocking out the other team to allow teammates to get rebounds... which contribute to less possessions for the other team.

Even in the playoffs, he made huge defensive plays, AI liked this one...

I get Butler isn't a gifted player like some of the top tier guys, but there are VERY FEW players that seem to make big plays in crunch time, Butler is one of those few players who seem to make those crucial big plays on BOTH sides of the ball. If you want success in the playoffs, these are the type of players you acquire or keep.

Jimmy Butler is a gifted player. That's not the point. He doesn't help maximize Joel Embiid and/or especially Ben Simmons on offense. He actually competes against them for the ball and space on the court. Even if you're of the mind that Jimmy Butler is worth Max salary well into his thirties, there has to be some acknowledgement that those three players cause each other to provide diminished returns on court. The 76ers should be in the business of accentuating Simmons and Embiid, not paying premium prices to put players in that they can't coexist on court.

Yeah. I have a lot of competing opinions.

If we run it back, can we realistically win a title with the same starters? I guess it’s possible.

If they go a different direction, can they get good enough comparable talent to replace Butler and/or Tobias? I have no idea if they can get Russell, Brogdon, etc, which makes taking a definitive opinion either difficult way.

If they split that money up among backend starters like Beverly, Danny Green, Terrance Ross, Marcus Morris, Dedmon, Randle, could they contend? Doesn’t seem like the best use of money.

Unless I’m made aware of a series of transactions that can make us better, then prob have to go with the re-sign Butler and Tobias and go for it.

That "IDK but not Philly" sounded waaay worse that if he just named one of the options (Lakers, HOU etc). I would be so depressed if Butler leaves and we max out Harris.

Mitchell’s one sided rivalry with us is so adorable.

There is a rivalry? I thought that ended after ROY "race"

So, now we are seeking the opinion of Donovan Mitchell?

Can't wait to see what other "experts" we start following over the coming days.

Not to say that he definetly knows something, but he may hear something from players connected to Butler. He may be more informed than most reporters. It was just weird that he said "not Philly' while in other cases he either named destination or said IDK.

Wait, do I need to only post Woj, Lowe or Shams info? Personally, I like looking at more (even non-experts info) because you sometimes get insight from a different point of view. I'd love to know Mitchell's reasoning to be so strong about his thoughts on Butler and Philly, wish he would have elaborated on that subject.

I don’t think he knows anything or anyone really considers him an expert. Just a fun little segment for fans to talk about and get a player’s thought.

They’re all fun to talk about for some of us. Some people need to keep in mind that some of these less-credentialed reports are just crap being throw at the wall.

The Lakers mouthpiece on ESPN, Ramona whatever-her-name-is, says that us and the Kings are "surprise bidders" for Al Horford.

Doesn't appear to be any additional news on top of the report from last week.

You can post whatever you want. Mitchell has zero inside info on Butler. He has no reasoning outside of making a guess based on what “reports” are out there.

Again, it’s very simple. Jimmy gets 5 year max over, he stays

Other than the fact that she wrote the article at 7:19AM this morning, and SI.com referenced it at 10:40AM this morning, yep, you're 100% right, old news... almost like, an hour and a half old, man I am slipping.

Hey man, do you think run it back is happening? I really hope so. If Butler and Tobi both get the max they have to take it right?

Makes sense as a basketball and leadership fit.

In my opinion, If Horford is an option and a 4 year deal is in play, they can’t bring back Jimmy on 5 year max.

No, I don’t think both come back. Thing could change based on what other free agents decide on, but as of now I only think one of those two are back

Man, if we pay 30+ to Harris and 20+ for four years to 33year old Horford, it would be brutal..

i could live with that. the horford as pf plan B rumor worries me a bit though. watching butler & horford decline in a couple years could be tough.

Return to Philadelphia 76ers
