Blake has just two years left with us before his Player Option.

Its crazy, but we're likely already half way through the Blake experiment here. Blake's contract moving forward looks like this.

19-20 season : $34,449,964
20-21 season: $36,810,996
Summer of 2021 Blake has a player option he will almost certainly opt out of his final year if he is healthy. He'll be 32 and able to sign one last contract that starts at 30% of the cap (which would likely be about $40 million starting salary).

Felt like when the deal was made he was locked into this huge long term contract, but if we don't start putting some pieces around him to get him out of the first round of the playoffs this season, we've got to strongly consider trading him next summer or else we're going to lose him for nothing.

He's been 100% professional while he has been here, but I can't see any reason why he would stay here if we're unable to win a playoff series.

How sure are you he has a PO? I remember reading that he didn't want an opt out or PO to show he was all-in with the Clippers when he re-signed.

Player options give the player tremendous power - if they're hurt or suck it's basically license to steal money. If they're healthy and performing up to the contract they're bailing. Team options are the opposite of course. If I was a player I'd never sign a TO contract and if I was a team I'd never offer a PO contract.

he definitely has a player option in 2022 for $39 million.

assuming we don't become contenders in that time and blake is healthy, i could genuinely see him declining his option and signing either a long-term deal for as much as he can or leaving for a contending team.

that said, $39 million is a LOT of money and i could totally see him picking it up, even if he has other options. it really depends on what his health and the market do in the next two years.

personally i think this year is another "building" year and when we have more cap flexibility next offseason 2021 could be the "go for it" year with blake on the roster. of course, we could also trade blake at any time given the direction of the team.

I'm not sure anyone would sign him for more money, but that might not even be an issue. It's not like this would be his first bid deal. He'll have earned over $200 million easily between NBA salary and endorsement deals in his carrier. It's certainly possible he signs for "only" $20 million on team with a legit shot of winning a ring.

40M or say a three year 75M - basically you gamble on your health and opt in and then figure you could get at least a 2 yr 35M deal the next off-season. But then again look at the money Horford is "expecting" this off-season...

I think there's a good chance we guarantee the 40m for Blake and extend him for 40-60 more for 3 years and restructure his contract.

Blake being a "horrible" contract on par with Wall has always been way overblown. It'll be really interesting to see what kind of a deal Tobias gets in the next couple of days.

It's pointless to even consider this conversation for the next year and a half, revisit it during the 2021 all-star break and we'll see where his health stands.

I forgot about Dre, good point. If things are not looking good this year, we should probably trade both Blake and Dre before we lose them for nothing (or overpay to keep them).

Are you calling me senile?

The more I think about it, if we can swap our Dre and get a 2-1, we're probably better off, especially if we get a reasonable post player back. Houston? Sacramento? Miami? A lot of teams are rumored to be doing a trade, we should get in there and get a steady post player and a wing player if we can.

$180,000,000 for Tobias.... One hundred and eighty MILLION for Tobias.
36,000,000 a year average. But most certainly will rise to a higher number by year 5.

a bit over half of what the pistons cost?
