Unexpected.
He had a lot high-level basketball left in him.
Sad to see you go DC. Thanks for all the moments and representing IND well. All the best moving forward. Cheers!

He had to quit the NBA so he could ride a bicycle around and hand out pamphlets door to door.

Re: Darren Collison retiring from the NBA at 31
Every professional athlete has to retire at some point. Good on him for departing on his own terms. The main reason many athletes choose to hang on to their careers is because of money, so it seems that DC has a secure financial situation at least, which again is great and speaks well of his prudence.
Might as well make this the DC appreciation thread. Over the past 2 seasons, he's been as solid and professional as anyone who've put on a Pacer's uniform. I've criticized him in the past, but basically those were for issues that were outside his control. He's always been something of a SG trapped in a PG's body. That said, the coaches had a role in mind for him and he filled it competently, and sometimes even excellently. Really, he's been one of the better free agents we've signed. On his first go-around here as a Pacer... well, let's not speak of that
Nah, it wasn't that bad. Pacers thought he was better than he was, so he lost out to George Hill, but he accepted his demotion professionally. And importantly he kept improving, so he returned as a much better player than before.
I wish DC luck in whatever he chooses to do next.

Hate to see him leave the game, but happy that it was not due to injuries. He appears to be leaving on his own terms. A lot of guys don't know when or how to do that.
Best to you, DC!

I think this is a good thing for our team chemistry. We were unlikely to bring him back without a big pay cut and this way his teammates won't think we mistreated their friend. "it's a business" only goes so far.

Re: Darren Collison retiring from the NBA at 31
Surprising, but at least he's going out with dignity. My respect for the man just grew way bigger with this decision.
He knows what he wants to do and when he wants to do it. He wanted to enjoy the rest of his life doing the other things that matter to him, his family, and his faith while still having the energy and youth to do them all. It is just retiring from basketball and not from life. In fact, he actually will be starting to live his definition of life.
I am happy with both of his separate tenures with the Pacers and I really wish him the best.

Re: Darren Collison retiring from the NBA at 31
I heard a few people talk about how he had to have a chest of ice brought to him after games for his joints.
If I already had millions of dollars, I probably would quit working also.

Woj reported that he was about to get 10-12 mil per in his new deal. Hard to walk away from that kind of money.
At the same time, this is good for the Pacers. I would’ve HATED to see us pay him that amount of money. It takes away even the possibility.

Agreed. It may not be my faith, but I respect anyone who lives a life that calls them to greater things. Let’s share some respect amongst us here.

Re: Darren Collison retiring from the NBA at 31
Didn't think about this before, but it would be a classy act if the team had some sort of ceremony at the first home game honoring DC. Not talking about retiring his jersey or anything like that, of course. Just a nice "thank you" recognition event for him.

Well all I know is 2 of those guys knocked on my door a while back at 9 am on a Saturday morning and woke me up! My German shepherd got really upset about it.

I get it. And I send them on their way politely. They just are happy with their beliefs and want to share it. Can’t fault them for it.
I could see you going door to door knocking about Pacers fandom!

I thought it was a funny image! People are too damn easily offended. Fact is they do go door to door knocking and hand out pamphlets!
If I was promoting the Pacers door to door I'd be handing out 2 for 1 ticket coupons and free bumper stickers and nobody would sick their German Shepard on me.
