No, but it also isn't ridiculous to theorize that we should have at least one assistant coach who has had experience as an NBA player, and/or at least one assistant coach who has prior experience on a different NBA coaching staff. It just seems healthy from the standpoint of wanting different perspectives.

We do have one-- Jerome Allen. Of the 30 current NBA head coaches, 21 never played in the league.

I’m more interested if you can coach or not, not your playing experience.

Inserting spoilers to hide this users sexist post. I gave a public, open ended warning that there will be zero tolerance on sexism in this thread. You elected to proceed and now you’ll sit out the beginning of FA. I’ll re-post it here again for you.

This move is just for PC. Silver stated he wanted it a few weeks back. Women cannot understand nor motivate male athletes like a male coach can.

How is she qualified? What coaching experience does she have?

Why don't you look her up and check her qualifications. She's got plenty.

With female referees and now coaches popping up suddenly in the last couple of years under Adam Silver's watch, I'm just curious about motives behind the hires. The goal is to win championships with the most talented people, male or female. If these are virtue signaling, "gender diversity" hires it degrades the integrity of the league.

I wonder why people don't ask this about every male hire?

Context matters. The reality is that professional business is still majority male. With the recent movement to install women in leadership roles simply because they're women, it's a question that's going to be raised. High level leadership and management roles are highly sought the world over and careers/salaries are on the line. If roles are filled solely based on gender and not on merit, it's a problem.

Sure. But failing to hire women can be a failure to hire on merit.
Anytime the best candidate isn't hired, this would apply, right?

Besides which, thinking of it as 'the best person' is simplistic in my opinion.
When I'm hiring, I'm trying to bolster my team. I might bring in people with particular skills my team is lacking, industry contacts, or diversity of background so I can get different perspectives and solutions offered.

The last thing I want are 6 of the 'best' candidates who are all similar in background, experience and skillset.

All I know is she was great on the Wizards broadcasts. She left a far better impression on me than the majority of NBA commentators.

And yet most see that as a Spurs mistake than a Kawhi mistake.

I don’t get the point...

Anyway, the “not weird dude” just requested Magic in LAL meeting... lol

My point is... Kawhi wouldn’t have a problem being coached by Brad and his non NBA veteran coaching staff. Neither would Lowry. They aren’t those kind of personalities... dudes like Kyrie and Lebron are the ones you want “former nba players on the staff” for.

But whatever. This is a lame debate anyway.

I will be pissed,if Lawson was hired for any other reason then being a good coach. The only reason to hire Lawson, BBIQ

Saying "IF" doesn't make this not sexist.

Seriously people. If your first thought is quotas or you think you need to say "just kidding" or put it in a spoiler, it's sexist. Keep it to yourself.

I'm shocked we had not 1 but 2 threads about hiring assistant coaches that are not former known head coaches in the league.

Does anyone outside of front offices know anything about assistant coaches?

Kind of impossible to have a substantive conversation.
