Super Teams Suck

Post#1 » by kpt » Sat Jun 29, 2019 5:42 pm

I am so tired of super teams. LAL, GS, HOU (Lesser Extent) soon to be NY or LAC or NJ or ... Give me DEN, MIL, TOR, POR to cheer for any day. Rant over.

And what is the deal with airplane food, amiright?

You're not wrong, it's a frustration we've collectively had for well over a decade now. Heck, depending on how you define superteam it goes back even further than that. There was a brief period when the salary cap first became a thing when superteams were harder to build, but we've sure gotten past it in the modern era. The older history of the game (pre-salary cap) is riddled with stacked teams.

It is what it is. I think superteams bother me far less than the Pistons continued irrelevance. Everything smells worse when your own team isn't any good.

Part of it is jealousy because if The Pistons were among them I wouldn’t have a problem

Once we sign Rose we will have a super team  remember when he thought the Knicks assembled a super team.

I mean, I doubt any of us would be upset on principle if the Pistons were the team in line to group together 3 top 15 players.

But we’re not, and never will be. Which grants us one of the few luxuries afforded to fans in markets like ours- the luxury of self righteousness.

The goin to work Pistons featured 4 (at least 3 time) all stars in their starting 5...

As others have said, this is mostly a matter of the have and have nots. People's perception on things differ greatly, if they "have" it.

If we ever draft a mvp level player or two we will be in line to create a super team. The warriors werent a free agent destination long ago. The Cavs made a super team and Cleveland is a trash can city. We just need to get Emoni Bates and were on our way.

I wouldn't want a superteam. When the Tigers started to become like the Yankees they were more difficult for me to root for. The 04 Pistons were not a superteam, they earned their reputation after they won a championship against a would be Lakers superteam (wasn't quite prime Malone or Payton though). Billups was the only MVP type-player, but he wasn't thought of as a Duncan, Kobe or even Nash.

A superteam is also much defined by it's competition. The 80's Lakers and Celtics were deep but the league was smaller before all the expansion teams came in. Other teams like the Sixers and Pistons could match them.

So MVP pairings like Curry and Durant or LeBron and Wade are now more difficult to match and LeBron, Davis and Leonard would be even more of an overkill.

It's not about the Pistons having a superteam, but when one single team stands out in talent above the rest the league becomes much less interesting to follow.

We have a Top 15 player on the team already. We need one more. Why say never will be? Not a good comment at all. I consider that having a small vision. We can get another Top 15 player if we're creative enough. SVG was definitely that creative.

Brooklyn just added Durant, Irving and DeAndre Jordan. Not sure DAJ qualifies as a 3rd in a Big Three anymore though. Does he?

Honestly KD is incredibly skilled but still not sure he has that killer instinct that means the Nets are making the finals four straight years like what happened when Lebron went to Miami. Kyrie is also good, maybe better than he has shown because he quite no that team a bit last year, but he isn't a top 10 player. If Butler and Harris stay in Philly or Leonard stays in Toronto I think both those teams will have a decent chance at some finals appearances the next four years.

Hard to say where Milwaukee goes as well, a lot depends on Giannis adding a jumper.

Nah. I'd hate it even if the Pistons had one. In fact, I'd probably hate it more. The league really needs to legislate it. I'm surprised they haven't yet.

If Kawhi signs with Lakers, they'll be at the crossroads with this thing. 3 of the top 5 players being on one team would be real trouble for the league.

We'll have to see how Durant comes back from his injury, but as far as killer instinct I saw a lot more from Durant in GS than LeBron in Miami.

It used to be that players played to win championships for the team, owner and city

Now it is the Owners, teams and Cities responsibility to win Championships for players.

Stars don't want to earn rings by beating other stars. They want to team up with other stars to ensure they win and or eliminate competition.

Yeap, in 89 we wanted to beat the Celtics badly, and after that we wanted to beat the Lakers badly. Nowadays, Isiah would've just joined one of them instead of be better than them. It's pathetic, but it is what it is.

I 100% agree with Snakebites. Because of our situation, we can come here and be self righteous, so it's kinda lame for us to discuss this (not that we shouldn't, this is what this boards are for, but yeah)
