Rozier Sign and trade opens up more free agency options

Post#1 » by Spin Move » Sun Jun 30, 2019 9:55 pm

Since we go over the cap to sign Terry we get the full 9 million MLE, hopefully we did not give Charolette too much for the privilege.

https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2019/06/boston-celtics-strike-sign-and-trade-deal-to-send-terry-rozier-to-charlotte-hornets-report.html
"By executing a sign-and-trade, Boston will be able to hold on to other key elements of their roster and roster-building tools, up to possibly keeping Al Horford and a full, $9 million mid-level exception."

Good luck Terry I think you will be a solid starter, you made more then I thought you would!

I guess I just don't understand the new CBA.

If Terry's starting salary is 18.4 mil and we are technically over the cap, then to sign and trade him for Kemba, Kemba's starting salary couldn't be more than $23.1 mil (125% + 100k).

No? What am I missing?

Even less. He only counts as half his salary outgoing - $9M.
So, it has to be combined with either a Kyrie or Al sign and trade.

If we are under cap, isn’t it 150%? If so it would work. Some day I have to suck it up and read cap rules....

It works if we are umder cap, but then we don't get the full MLE, and we have to renounce free agents - which is the subject of this thread.

It would be awesome if we are able to S&T Al to Pelicans and they S&T Randle to us since Al wants to move on. Or Just sign Al if he will return. If that works under the cap rules.

They would gain a trade exception, so that is some incentive for them to do it.

I would be surprised if we gave up anything more than a second rounder. It doesn't really open that many doors for us.

What good does that do us? Do we get a second round pick?

We still have to waive rights to Al and Morris. But I think the sign and trade allows us to keep MLE just not Al.

So this is relatively pointless. As long as now we are not giving new jersey ****. Lots of stuff to come. But see ya rozier.

So the current word is that it’s a straight Rozier-Kemba sign and trade, with us signing Terry into cap space and absorbing Kemba into cap space - really just a favor to Rozier and the Hornets, although we might get a first or second round pick back.

If we were able to get Brooklyn to bite - sending picks their way - it would open up a Horford to PHI sign and trade being folded into the Butler/Miami deal.

At most, you could have Philly and Miami first send first-round picks to Boston for cash or seconds, then we send those picks to Brooklyn to incentivize them, then we do the Horford/Butler/Richardson+ deal..

It would be funny to see Brooklyn collect three or four firsts for agreeing to take Kyrie away from Boston by sign and trade..

Do we know anything for sure yet about the MLE? I've heard we have it and we don't. Is it all still up in the air?

We don’t if it’s a Kemba/Rozier sign and trade.. get a third team involved and it’s possible

FWIW:

"But a league source refuted that the trade will enable the Celtics to use the full $9.3 million mid-level exception on another free agent. The Celtics remain in the market for a replacement big man, but according to the source are still limited to offering a $4.7 “room” exception to prospective candidates."

So it seems like its agreed who is going where but exactly how all the moves will happen hasn't been sorted out yet. Perhaps Ainge will see who he can get and what exemption is needed to get them and then make moves accordingly.
