How good could our defense be?

Post#1 » by PhillyPhilly » Tue Jul 2, 2019 1:06 am

Horford, Harris, Simmons, Richardson, Embiid with Smith and Matisse on the bench etc etc. There is a general agreement amongst media folks that we should have the best defense next season and some are even suggesting that it should be by a wide margin. Really excited to see how they mesh because elite defense, combined with a starting five who can all average 15 plus next year, would bode really well for us moving forward.

ELlTE.

And if Thybulle and or Zhaire develop it could get really scary.

Agreed. Just thinking about the potential "super team" the Lakers may have, and tbh i'm actually intrigued to see how we'd match up with them because of the potential of this defense we could have lol :D .

We will be one of the best . The one weakness we may have is with quick guards...

Zhaire is very quick footed and Richardson looks pretty nibble too tbh.

I mean the elusive smaller guards like Kemba, kyrie, dame....

I'm not so sure Richardson, zhaire are used to guarding small guards.

They said on first take yesterday that it could be the best defense in the NBA by a wide margin. No more watching JJ redick getting burned , then Embiid rolling over to cover for him.

Richardson has made some big plays on guys like that but with the current rules of the NBA plus the ever increasing range of some of those guys, it's impossible to really shut that kind of player down.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

Maybe the crowd method will work. I like our defensive potential.

If we can make them shoot a lower percentage than usual, thats a win.

Thats alot different than shutting them down, making it hard on them is what we would want to happen.

Putting Zhaire to the side for one second, if Matisse Thybulle is in the NBA who he has been in college, then Ben, Josh, Thybulle, Horford and Embiid could be the greatest in the history of ever there was.

That’s why al Horford and Or embiid will protect the rim at all times. They can blow past one defender but they got the bigs waiting for them near the rim.

The defense should be insanely good, especially if Ennis is fully healthy as he had some leg issues last year. Richardson is reputed to have a talent for guarding point guards and Zhaire has the tools for it. This team is long, athletic and full of guys with strong defensive instincts and commitment, Tobi and Scott are probably the weakest defenders and Shake is long, but not the athlete some of the other guys are. Brand is building with D as a priority.

You need to slow your roll on Thybulle. He could become an elite defender, but the guy played at the top of a zone in college and this is going to be his first year in the NBA. His offensive game is under-developed, so if he can't hit shots we're not even going to see him on the floor much this year. If him or Zhaire get 15 good minutes a game this year I'll be happy with the progress.

Ive said it before.

Modern NBA defense involves multiple players who can rotate to the paint and protect the rim. Defense shouldn’t just rely on a center playing goalie. Because nowadays offense is more spaced and they like to pull the rim protector away from the rim. That what makes Raps, Warriors and Celtics defense great. They dont need a rim protector C when they have multiple forwards who can protect the rim.

With Zhaire, Thybulle, Horford and Josh Rich, I think we CAN have the best defense out there.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.

Thybulle looks like Cov Jr. out there thus far. Double # jersey, double arm sleeves. 3 and D potential is obvious. Him along with Zhaire in a couple years is pretty damn scary to think about.

im going so far, that i will be disappointed if we dont have the best D in the league. the personnel couldnt be better to do it. the only reason to not accomplish that would be a horrible defense scheme, like we have seen last season.

embiid is DPOY-candidate, ben is elite on D too when he wants to...paired with horford, jrich, zhaire, thybulle...who the hell should be better on D?

The flip side is those small guards (Kenna/kyrie/dame) are at a huge disadvantage trying to guard Simmons or now Richardson.

This is why Simmons really needs to develop a little jump hook/push shot floater from 10 feet out. Those little guard have no chance to defend it cause they are too short.

I'm curious about Kyle Quinn. Is he a post defender? Or shot blocker?..
