Re: Offseason Thread - So Begins The Lesser Offseason - Well... After Kawhi Decides
We sitting here with unprotected 1sts from Dallas and dudes are complaining about protected future late 1sts & 2nd rd picks attached to expirings.
You know the best thing about a TO 1+1 deal? If a player like Bullock or Portis shows a jump in production & we throw them in a trade for a star at a deadline or something, that new team who may or may not be having some cap issues can just pick the option up with no worries.
If the player is regular, they can just decline the option. It’s up to the team. A team in control is a plus.

It shows bad judgement to overpay when its not nescessary.
Who overpaid for what?
Knicks overpaid for Taj, Portis, Bullock, Ellington, Payton. Thats $50+mil. I get and agree we need to sign some vets. This was excessive and unnecessary though. Give me Vonleh for $2mil. Give me picks and expirings. Give me a meeting with Kawhi even if it doesn't go anywhere.
Just seems so pointless to me. I dont know. Hopefully we make a run and itsall worth it.

Let’s say they’re in love with Randle and didn’t want to lose him...okay, sign him. You’ve still got more than enough cap space to still offer Kawhi the max. There’s a reason the other guys couldn’t even get a guaranteed second year. They’re just guys. If you can get a meeting with a top 5 player in the league you take it.

We had 80 million in cap space and needed to fill the roster up and they're all expiring contracts anyway so who cares? we didn't need to sign bargains and vonleh sucks anyway

Vonleh showed no development at season’s end.
He was the same player from the start of the season. That’s not to say he wasn’t decent but he was just one of the bright spots on a trash team. Portis plays better defense and shoots it better. Younger too.

Your logic makes no sense. How would the Knicks reach the FLOOR signing players for 2 million. Based on what you are saying the knicks would have had to sign a **** load of players well above the 15 man roster to reach the floor.
Your argument would only make sense if there was no floor the team had to meet. But for the fact there is a floor, the knicks made the right moves. Signing a bunch of dudes for league minimum and 2 million dollars etc would have never achieved that.
The Knicks made the right moves

Im not mad we didnt sign any star. I always said it was a long shot and a bad plan because we would suck with KP out and nobody would want to come to a bad team.
The worst part is we are not really trying and our plan B is not good. Its basically the same as plan A. It just pointless to use the stretch and clear cap if we apparently have no interest in any top free agents.
That we were so worried about missing out to overpay for 1 year the free agents we signed makes things even worse...good thing we got Bullocks to take us from 26 wins to 28 wins. Pass on those 1st rounders and a .000001% chance at Kawhi
Would you rather be going into the season with podsibly no RJ with Tim, Lee & Porzingis coming off injury and possibly on the QO?
Legit question because that was the alternative.
I agree with the stretch though, that was unnecessary but now any bad contract is all on Perry. It’s his contracts to control. Plan A should always be Plan A. We should always be flexible enough to be an option for a star. 2020, 2021, 2022....we should always go in free agency wanting the best player. Every team should. It’s when you take yourself out the game when ish gets ugly.
Meanwhile, you go each year focused on developing the young core like everyone wanted. I see a beautiful plan, I don’t see the issue. And the fact that they told us they won’t steer away from the plans for of short term deals while trying to add talent if they miss on the only 2 big fish & stayed to it, I mess with it.
Either way we would have RJ or a top pick. What was done is done. I just think we could have used our cap space better. But i do like RJ and Mitch so mad props to management for that.

Never thought we’d get Kawhi, but shyt, I’d still take a shot at him at the cost of signing the shyt we ended up with. We’re rebuilding, if the bums we overpaid were gone, we could’ve got cheaper bums to replace them after meeting Kawhi.
Randle I’m cool wit... but we could’ve had him and still had max money available , so why couldn’t we just wait, even if there was only a 0.1% chance to land him?

We don't need to meet the floor so the argument does make sense

Just for clarity, only one unprotected 1st. 2021.

If Kawhi wanted to come, we could create room pretty easily. RJ, Knox, Frank, a couple of other moves. Wouldn't be hard but wouldn't be ideal versus just using the room we had.
Might be able to unload a couple of the 10M guys with a pick or two or maybe not even that (Lakers) if those players went along.

Portis is a hortible defender man. Vonleh is way better on that end

Never thought we’d get Kawhi, but shyt, I’d still take a shot at him at the cost of signing the shyt we ended up with. We’re rebuilding, if the bums we overpaid were gone, we could’ve got cheaper bums to replace them after meeting Kawhi.

Maybe because they don't see it the same way you do?
If I'm faced with that low a percentage of getting someone and see players that I see something in and want to take a shot at, I'd probably do the same in that same scenario.

Wait, you would be ok with trading our core for Kawhi after refusing to wait 3 days to sign him for free? Am I reading that right dude???

Please don’t act like I’m the only one seeing it this way. When this shyt spreads and everyone becomes aware... there’ll be millions more like me saying the same thing. Just wait.
Hurry up to sign bums vs wait 3 days to take a chance on the beat player in the league. You take bums... ok.

The teams waiting, Lakers & Clippers specifically missing out on depth. They’ll get minimum guys. Those minimum guys won’t be better than dudes like Bullock, EP & Portis. If they are, they’re ringchasers that would never take min from the Knicks. We don’t get that liberty being a trash record team.
The plan was obviously KD + Kawhi. Once the KD thing blew up, just accelerate plan B.
If Kawhi is a free agent again next year, it’s a new stance we’re coming from (assuming we’ve shown to be improved). Maybe we won’t need to sell Kawhi on joining with another star. Maybe Mitch, Randle & RJ shows to be enough with our depth.

This. Imagine being Deebo’d by the likes of Wayne Ellington and Elfrid Payton...couldn’t be me.
