Buddy Hield
It's time to start giving our players some love with their own individual threads where we can discuss their journey for better or worse.
I figured Buddy will be a hot topic in the coming days since he is extension eligible starting July 6th.
The deadline to get an extension done is Oct 14th.

I'd keep him for sure, even if it took the max. I hope he takes substantially less of course.

Re: Buddy Hield
Jamal Murray got the max 5/170 extension, do we think Buddy's will be in the same ballpark? I think you lock him up no matter what the price is, we know he's the long term SG next to Fox so get it done now before he ever gets to RFA.

Re: Buddy Hield
During the game today Buddy said this off season he's been working on getting to the free throw line. He envisions getting to the line will bump his scoring into the elite tier.

Thanks for the quote. And clearly he has progressed nicely in the two seasons he has been here.
Code: Select all
Season Age MP TS% 3P% AST% TOV% USG% DRB% STL% BLK% WS/48 VORP
2017-18 25 2024 0.557 0.431 12.8 11.3 24.3 14.8 2.1 1.0 0.067 0.9
2018-19 26 2615 0.587 0.427 11.9 9.2 25.1 12.4 1.0 1.1 0.108 2.0
I think that a few extra FTs could push his TS% into the .600 range. That would be elite. He could also work on adding a few more assists especially given his usage rate. He has definitely worked on reducing the long 2s - well done Buddy.
And on the defensive side of the ball - working on defensive rebounding would help and definitely help the team. It wouldn't take much for him to get there on that side of the ball.

Buddy looked like he put on some muscle to me too. Hard to tell when he wasn't suited up, but he looked bigger to me.

I want him back at all costs, but I think we should do it now. I know Murray just got 170, but I dont think that's buddies value yet. Murray was 2nd best player on a top seed in the west.
I'd be looking more towards brogdan. Offer buddy 4/100 extension right now. 25per.

Re: Buddy Hield
You wait and he improves you’re looking at a max or nothing and having to move him as arguably one of the top five shooters in what is now a shooters league.
I wouldn’t take a risk of lowballing him as you need to remember that because he is a couple years older than the other guys his potential earnings for career are a bit less and you have to think that his agent is telling him this.
I would pay him according to that factor really. Consider that he is going to be moving into his prime on this contract and give him what he is worth.

Agreed, either way - open the negotiations now and close the door.

I'm for it, but with all the money we just spent if FA do we have the flexibility to offer this now?

I was messing around with excel and came to some calculations assuming Bogdan gets 4/70; Buddy gets 5/160; and Bagley/Fox get max deals (5/181; 5/190). Under those assumptions, the roster is affordable for at least the next 4 years. It becomes a little dicey after that when Bagley would come up for extension.

Re: Buddy Hield
Forgot to mention earlier: Buddy is eligible for the rookie scale extension max of 25%.
5 years $158.1M
5 years $158.1M

The cap is projected to go up approximately $7-8M per year so we can actually avoid the luxury tax at least for the next three years for sure.

I love Buddy, but we potentially have some cap space next offseason, so I see no reason to extend him until then.

Honestly I'm a bit surprised Buddy hasn't been extended yet.
Probably means Vlade isn't just handing out the max.
The wait continues.

No reason to. You’d offer him longevity now for a deal. Otherwise you still have a lot of power with him next summer

Disagree here. 4/100 right now is what they should offer. If he has an excellent season next year like many of us predict, he’ll want the max. They should push for him to resign now.
