Is there anything in the CBA that would prevent teams from signing a family member/friend as a way to circumvent the max player salary? I assume nobody here would be happy if the Knicks offered matching max contracts to Giannis and his brother?

There is a morality clause for sure. But not sure if they'd bat an eye if it's Giannis max + room MLE for Thannasis.

Sounds like what the Braves GM got busted for when signing International players and got banned from baseball forever when he would pay the player's family members as team scouts to get around the pool money maximum. I would suspect the NBA wouldn't allow that.

Like I said it makes no sense. If it's a partial guarantee like what Tucker got it makes sense. I'll wait for a legitimate report.

It makes sense when you can't lure big name free agents to your city and the most important thing to your star free agent is family. You are desperate to do all you can to make sure you sign the MVP of the league to a new contract. The 15th roster spot is a scrub that usually doesn't play anyway, and we seem to throw away that much every year in stretching a bad contract...

Basically, it is a small price to pay. It also may have stopped The Mavs from signing him. Porzingis and Giannis are buds... you get both of Giannis's brothers on that team with Porzingis re-upping.. That creates a pretty favorable scenario for getting Giannis...Luca is a nice player as well... Or any other championship contending team that may be luring Giannis away.

Someone explain to me what happens In two years after Giannis signs the super max and they cut his brother because he is a terrible basketball player who wouldn’t make a g-league roster let alone a nba roster ? Are you just going to give him a lifetime contract ? You guys are crazy if you think there’s anything positive that’s going to come out of this. If Giannis needs his brothers around so much give him a job with the organization. Don’t **** compromise the integrity of the team with a guy who has no business being on the roster. You don’t think other players see this **** and think it causes anything except resentment? If it’s a partially guaranteed or two way contract it makes sense because Thanasis can earn his way onto the team (whether justified or not) Atleast he was competing for it.

I think Giannis understands this is a business. If his brother isn’t performing it’s not like he won’t understand the standard. He sets it.

Not much of a player but thanasis is a spirited individual. He will be a good locker room guy, not to mention a positive presence on the bench. I'd imagine giannis will benefit having his brother talking to him during games and helping him push through adversity. I think bud gives him a few minutes on an easy or unimportant night. Bud though decides the minutes and no one else. He shouldn't feel or be pressured to play him, otherwise this won't end well.

From what I understand, Bud is hardest on Giannis of all the players. He isn't a guy who lives in a bubble of yes men. That would be a Kyrie thing. That's not a Giannis thing. I wouldn't worry about it from that perspective.

Ugh, this is the kind of move that smart organizations don’t make. Like yeah, I get it. Giannis is all about family but nepotism in any form should never inspire confidence. Love the Antetokounmpo family and they’re all wonderful people but an NBA roster spot and guaranteed salary isn’t some charity gift that you hand out to family members. There’s a reason Thanasis hasn’t sniffed an NBA roster in 4 years.
