Listen, RJ is a scorer so the best thing to do is help him become the best version of what he is or what he believes he is. That's his DNA to score. Trying to turn him into some playmaker wont work you are then trying to restructure his DNA and hes already in the league. Stuff like that needs to be taught at a very early age and a lot of times it cant be taught. I'm sure he's spent enough time with Steve Nash, watched Nash and still he doesnt have those instincts to be a creator for others. So now the Knicks have to help him master what he is, which is a scorer. You can't throw all this info at him at once. Let him become better at free throws and spot up jumpers for now, imo that needs to be phase 1 of his development.

Afraid RJ thinks taking lot of shots = "Mamba Mentality".

Just a reminder...https://nba.nbcsports.com/2018/07/14/evolution-of-trae-young-at-summer-league
LAS VEGAS — Trae Young looked overmatched in his first two Summer League games. No question.

In Salt Lake City, the No. 5 pick and newest face of the Atlanta franchise shot 9-of-36 overall and 2-of-16 from three through two games. The Stephen Curry comparisons, which were always overheated, looked foolish. Young couldn’t create space on his drives, could not find lanes for his passes, and was rushing his shot. Like everyone around the NBA, I wrote about it saying he “laid bricks.” NBA Twitter roasted him. There was a lot of “they wanted this guy instead of Luka Doncic?” comments, and a few hot takers ever threw the “B” word — “bust” — around.

An issue? His shots weren’t falling. When they do, his game will open up. It’ll create space for himself. Y’all get so quick on kids. It takes MLB/NHL players 2-3 years to be good/great players. I mean I expect a big year. But jeez it was a bad game

MLB is more like 3-7 if they're very good depending if coming from 4 years college or international draft at 16. The real studs come in at 19-20 but plenty of real good players, like Aaron Judge don't find their way till 24+.

This board is really good at managing expectations and being patient

Thank God for that. I'd hate to see us angry and frustrated.

see u totally missed the point...I don't care if he goes 1-10...he didn't look to pass at all. I can live with the struggles and I really don't care his shot wasn't falling. The mentality issue needs to be corrected.

RJ just played one (postponed) summer league game. He will get his shot up. In fact, the coaching staff was right to tell him to just shoot (although they should have said SCORE not just shoot). I am more worried about the coaching tbh. If this is what fiz has in mind in the regular season then

Horrible draft strategy then. If they wanted a Jarrett Culver type then they should have drafted Culver. Trying to turn RJ into Culver is horrible strategy. This is RJ Barrett we know who we took and why we took him. If we drafted another kid that needs his mentality of how he plays the game completely readjuated then we have no clue what we are doing.

At least RJ doesn't lack confidence in his ability. He'll have awful shooting nights like this in the league, it's a matter of getting amnesia and moving on to the next one.

I still maintain he has good slashing ability, he needs to focus more on that and working on getting to the line (and improving from the stripe.) A lot of the guys looked nervous/out of sorts tonight. i figure it's a combination of the magnitude of this game and them not playing in a couple months and not being in game shape yet.

On a side note Trier and Knox looked good offensively and Mitchell had many nice moments. I'm curious to see how they bounce back on Sunday.

We stay drafting dudes then want to turn them into somebody they aren't. That needs to stop. Maximize their strengths or don't draft them at all. Period

Guys, RJ isn't a good shooter. Expecting his shot to just start falling as if that's the reversion to the mean is a mismanaged expectation.

This isn't a hot take. He has a lot of improving to do with his jumper. We knew this when we drafted him.
