RJ is just in the process of fixing his shot. The effects of which won’t show at once. This shouldn’t be worrying for us.

His footwork was messy, first step slow, drives to the right minimal, tunnel vision in full effect, and shooting touch way off.
He has a lot to work on.

see u totally missed the point...I don't care if he goes 1-10...he didn't look to pass at all. I can live with the struggles and I really don't care his shot wasn't falling. The mentality issue needs to be corrected.
Yeah he was passing up open teammates, to force bad ill advised shots, that’s indicative of a low b-ball iq...
This could take a while... if ever

RJ reminded me of Regular Season Knox, he shot everything in his hands and forced drives. I think he will be fine, he will have a good game and people will call him an All Star an sht like that as always on this forum

When a Knicks rookie, especially a perimeter player is struggling,Knicks fans here are always like: He will be fine, it will take 2-3 years for him to become good player
Then I look at Frank Ntilikina and can't help crying
None of any Knicks rookies in last decade looks impressive, aside from Mitchell Robinson and it is still too early to tell if he will become an allstar player or Poor man's DAJ

We really hate our young picks don't we? I've read:
19 year old Knox can't improve. Wasted pick
Trier's a scrub and ball hog doesn't play defense
Trade Frank for DWIGHT MFN HOWARD
RJ is a bust & trade him for Westbrook (after ONE SL game)
Unfreakinbelievable

Re: SL Game Thread # 1: CaKnickians vs. Pelicanos
Not worried about this.
He shot a lot and it wasn't falling.
Summer league is rarely indicative of a player's impact in the league. The players who shine are often the ones that have to - undrafted/2nd rounders looking to make rosters or stick.
There's no real chemistry/cohesion and everyone is basically playing for themselves.
He was aggressive and low-efficiency, as advertised. I think he comes into his own and still has a solid rookie season. Fanbase needs to be patient. This isn't a Frank-lack of heart situation.

The way he bricked his free throws was alarming.

Was a problem at Duke...
It’s one game. But everything I saw in college was on full display last night. He looks sluggish.

Re: SL Game Thread # 1: CaKnickians vs. Pelicanos
I’m gonna chalk this first game up to nerves for RJ and adjusting to the speed and size of the NBA. He’s built for it. He will put the necessary work in to improve and find his advantages. Maybe RJ would’ve benefited from playing the 2 and not the 3? His size and strength is more pronounced at that position, but with Trier starting he slid to the 3.
Was anybody else impressed with Wooten? I thought he moved well defensively and impressed with his recovery to make blocks.

I think we could all agree he needs some work. The only player in the draft absent Zion who probably doesn’t need much work is Garland

Re: SL Game Thread # 1: CaKnickians vs. Pelicanos
A lot can be said about RJ’s performance but I’d rather wait until game 2 before drawing any conclusions, too many different factors might have affected his game (nerves, the match-up with Zion, adjusting to NBA speed and physicality etc.). Clearly, it wasn’t good. Let’s hope he puts up a better performance in game 2.
Trier is a baller though. And Knox has clearly improved parts of his game, although his energy was inconsistent.

This is what Barrett is as a player right now; he has a lot of flaws to his game and that was abundantly clear at Duke. Despite all his pedigree and development advantages growing up, he's still a project. Nothing I saw last night surprised me.
We drafted him for what we believe he can become, not what he is. We'll need some patience with this kid too.

Pretty standard response there. You don’t have these coaches coming out and publicly being critical of a rookie in his first SL game, and to expect otherwise is foolish.
Reading into this generic comment is a mistake.

Horrible draft strategy then. If they wanted a Jarrett Culver type then they should have drafted Culver. Trying to turn RJ into Culver is horrible strategy. This is RJ Barrett we know who we took and why we took him. If we drafted another kid that needs his mentality of how he plays the game completely readjuated then we have no clue what we are doing.
then be a high volume low percentage tunnell vision scorer? That makes no sense...the guy has enough bbiq to start making the right play. It doesn't need to be to an extreme. I am not asking him to be Jason Kidd and facilitate but if he is going to have a high usage # he is going to need to learn when to attack and when to move the ball. If you break down the defense and have two guys in front of you kick it out for the open 3...if your saying he is incapable of doing that then he will never live up to expectations because he is not a quick twitch high flying guy to go up against NBA bigs like that. He needs to develop some craftiness and smarts around the rim so he limits those 4-18 nights and is productive when the shot isn't falling.
He knows the game enough and just needs to be coached with that in mind.
Increasing his efficiency is the best we can hope for right now. He's gonna be high usage, high volume shooter, that's why we drafted him, so now they need to turn him into a more efficient one. The other parts of his game can evolve over time especially once he establishes himself in the league and has the right teammates around him but that shouldnt be the main focus right now.

This was a problem at Duke but everyone chalked it up to a "lack of spacing" for some reason, or "Coach K can't coach anymore". Barrett does not read the floor well. Sure, it can be improved, but guys who don't have that natural knack for seeing the floor make me wary.
