We don't need an exception for Jabari. We have Bird Rights.

The issue now is the luxtax and roster spots. We currently have a cap number of $128.5M assuming Simmons is cut. That leaves just $4.1M for Jabari. If we waive a guy like Jones, that increases to 5.5M of luxtax room.

So I guess that means that Wall's contract is covered by insurance?

I can't imagine Leonsis pushing up this close to the luxury tax for a team that's going to max out at 30 wins.

If he remains on the sideline with the same injury for 41 games, the insurance pays 80 percent of the rest of his salary.

Pretty sure he will miss half the season. So yes, they may have freedom to go slightly into the luxury tax.

I recall some mechanism by which the insurer could exclude contracts from coverage, so I wasn't sure whaat the deal is here.

So that's that for the TPE's. There isn't much need to preserve any luxtax room this season because we lack the TPE's to absorb any more salary. So if we can sign Parker to the remaining luxtax room we have left, we may as well pull the trigger.

Didn't know that Gerald Green had kin in the NBA.

Also: White Flight -- we hardly knew you. Best of luck avoiding moving to Brooklyn.

Man I was hoping to sign Jabari. Seems like he wants to be here which is rare.

so this makes twice that Shep got something for nothing. Not singing Sheps praises, but that is pretty good.

nate33 wrote:I'm torn. It looks like a good use of assets - getting a legit NBA player for nothing, but I'm not sure what the point is of adding an expiring contract guy.

I'd rather have Jabari on a 2-year or 2+1 deal. That way, if he proves valuable, he is an asset to trade or cheap talent going forward.

But, what if Jabari were not to prove valuable? As has been the case so far, hence must be considered the most likely path forward. We see how much interest he has garnered as a FA.

I like Davis Bertans a lot. I was aware of him & liked him the year the Spurs took him in the draft (2011). He shot 8.5 3-pointers per 40 minutes this year & made 43% of them. 88.1% from the FT line.

Bertans has been a significantly better player than Jabari Parker. I.e. he is as likely or more likely to be tradable this year than Parker (unless of course we base it on Parker doing things he hasn't done in the past). He's 26; we may want to extend him.

Bertans has only one problem as a 4: rebounding. He's a below average defensive rebounder & a terrible offensive rebounder.

IMO, this is quite a good move.

I'm fine with the Bertans move. Wouldn't be surprised if we end up flipping him for a draft pick tbh. Stretch 4's are valuable.

I have to say I am impressed by the way you seem to have become convinced by Jabari. I mean convinced that there is some significant likelihood of his improving quite a lot.

I like Jabari, btw, & I definitely think he is a nice guy. This appeared today: https://chicago.suntimes.com/sports-saturday/2019/7/6/20684161/jabari-parker-bulls-pointers-breakup-hometown-patient

But... if we waive Jones to give Parker more money... I will cry. Won't be pretty I can tell you! :)

(Truth is, I have no idea why I am so convinced that Jones is going to be a really good player. But, somehow, I have a really high degree of certitude about it! Weird....)

Also, we will now have 5 guys who can shoot 3's in our starting lineup. I expect us to surprise some people next year. And you can start to see how the sea is parting for Beal to have a big big year.

But it's also obvious that Sheppard is trying to change the culture of the team. We have to face reality. The Wizards were talented last year and were terrible. We need a complete culture overhaul. Bertans is a consummate professional. I feel like we are following the Spurs model.

Well, if they add Nate, I mean Jabari Parker, they'll have 19 players. So four have to go. Simmons is obviously gone and after that I think it depends on the SL for some of these guys though Jones is probably going to go due to the numbers. Even if they stretch Ian, they still have to get rid of two more. I just don't see them bringing in Parker unless it's a one-year deal but even then, I think they are putting their stock in Brown and Hachimura for now.
