He has been wrong about plenty of things in the past, but wow do I want him to be right this time around. Salcedo just turned 16, so $4.5 million would be a hefty price tag (more money than the highest paif IFAs in 2005 and 2006 combined). However, this kid is pretty much a freak.

He has already supposedly turned down a $3.5 million deal, and not many teams other than the Yanks can throw $4+ million at a 16 year old crapshoot.

I don't believe anything Gammons says. However, this would be nice if it happens. I always scoff at the superstar comparisions, but if the Yankees are willing to pay him $4.5 million then he must be good. If Boras is involved, he must want a major league deal too. It'll be interested to see if the Yankees sign him, it wouldn't hurt to get more talent in the system.

Yeah, I'd rather make a mistake on an unproven player in the draft or IFA that has a ton of potential than make a mistake on a guy who is proven to be mediocore but still demands a lot of money (Pavano and others).

From all the reports, yes he is. That is why he couldn't be signed during the July 2nd period when everybody else was signed. Maybe he is the reason the Yanks decided to make one "big" IFA signing, perhaps they were waiting on him.

Whenever a young phenom comes along, people doubt their age...it happened with Montero last year. If he had some no name agent with him, I think there would be a better chance of him being older. I can't see Boras taking chances, he does his homework.

So how does one compare him to Angelini? I'm pretty sure that was his name, the SS from the 10th or so round. I know Angelini would be closer to the bigs just based on age alone but how do they compare? I remember everyone talking Angelini being the guy that could potentially take over for Jeter if he pans out. -Jitpal

Personally, I am very very high on Angelini. He was my favorite draft pick, liked him more than Brackman.

Obviously I and everybody else know a lot less about Salcedo and he is even more raw than Angelini. But in terms of body and tools, Salcedo clearly blows him out of the water. He seems to project for a lot more power, and his defensive tools sound very advanced for his age.

There are plenty of international and domestic draftees that have the tools to be an Arod like player, only the special ones put it together though.

Yet he is still wrong as much as (probably more than) he is correct. I really don't know why, you would think he has better sources than anybody else out there.

because he is trusted more than anyone else. I just think he is professional and being a sox fan, I really don't find him to be too big of a homer

I think Gammons is fairly knowledgable about baseball and he does a good job with his job (except when he does Red Sox games), but he's the last person I'm going to for news.

I get what you're saying about international prospects. American college and high school kids is a different story. He probably knows more about the Cape Cod league than anyone, which means a lot because of all the top prospects that go through there.

I find Gammons fairly informed, but yeah, he can be a bit of a Red Sox homer. He does have some connections.

How is he on Major League news? What I was saying is he is the best source for news around the majors, if you need something on a particular team of course there are the experts. But no one knows more from around the league than Gammons.
