The moment Hachimura was drafted, Parker wasn't going to be brought back.
1. They want Rui to get alot of minutes.
2. Jabari & Rui are similar types of players. They probably wanted to avoid duplication at the PF position.

General loser-ish-ness: Washington Wizards
Just over two calendar years ago, the Washington Wizards were one Kelly Olynyk outburst from the Eastern Conference finals. Now they are basically tanking, though they have Beal, which amounts to holding Beal hostage. Players have only so many NBA minutes in them. It is such a shame that Beal -- who led the league in minutes last season -- might have to waste 3,000 more carrying this sorry roster.
In mid-December, Washington traded a young player (Oubre) for an adult in the room (Trevor Ariza) to save their unraveling season. Six weeks later, the Wizards gave up by dealing Porter.
Their payroll is so bloated, they had to pass on re-signing potentially useful players -- Portis and Satoransky -- in favor of cheaper deals to Thomas Bryant (promising!), Ish Smith and Isaiah Thomas.
They didn't have the flexibility to hunt blue-chip future picks in salary dumps the way Memphis and Atlanta did. Instead, they gathered fringe prospects and second-round picks in junior versions of those deals. That is something -- a reversal of past pick hemorrhaging, assuming ownership does not mandate the sale of all those second-rounders.
Look... the Wizards are carrying a huge set of messes made by Ernie Grunfeld. Not just players/salaries on our roster but players we could have had who are not on our roster. Not just that but a significant deficit in assets to acquire players. Not just that but the baleful combination of big salaries & few players -- that's how we ended the Grunfeld era.
There is no way forward that does not involve paying for Ernie's mistakes. No way. Of course, as fans of the team, we'd like to fantasize that there can be a quick "reload" followed by success (as measured by returning to our previous interstellar high point of making it to r2 of the playoffs in the weaker Eastern Conference). This is what leads to fond hopes & fantasies like some of us have had about e.g. Jabari Parker.
Sorry, not happening. The one correct element in such fantasies is the understanding that to get better any time soon, we'd have to be extremely lucky. Thus, if Bryant is as much better than expected this year as he was last year, if Troy Brown's upside is not a solid journeyman or potential starter but rather a borderline all-star starter, if Rui Hachimura is a potential star player (who begins quickly to move in that direction), if Admiral Schofield is the second coming of Jae Crowder, if Jemerrio Jones is the disruptive defensive force of my fantasies, if Mo Wagner proves to be an actual productive NBA player, etc. -- why then, if all these dreams come true, we could be pretty good... in 2-3 years.
All the same, much of what Zach Lowe wrote in this article is BS, an absolute load.
Thus, no, Bobby Portis is not "potentially useful." He's a guy who has shown himself as an unproductive player. &, although Satoransky certainly is a useful player, it's a fiction that we "had to pass on" him. We chose to let him go. Nor is Thomas Bryant simply "promising;" he was actually objectively terrific last year -- one of the top 20 Centers in the league. 30 out of 30 NBA GMs would choose Thomas Bryant over Bobby Portis.
& Jabari? He's been a terrible player for 5 seasons. Nice kid. Charming. Has a desire to be a philanthropist. It's all good. As to basketball, he plays the game the way he knows how to play the game. It's not such a good way.
Best thing now is to have low expectations. If those are exceeded in any way it'll be fun. High expectations will just set us up for more disappointment.

I mostly agree with what both Zach and you wrote above, I don’t think the sentiments are that different. He didn’t write anything about Jabari Parker.

I would have liked to see what Rojas would have done with this roster.
No situation was more dire than Brooklyn just a few years ago.

Zach Lowe is a click bait douche bag ! He's either dick riding most of the time or banging on harsh reviews for value. There was no magic bullet . But the idea that we are holding Beal hostage is stupid . If Beal wanted out he would be out.

Of course! Me too. I've wondered why Rosas even stopped by for an interview -- maybe just a courtesy...?
One thing Tommy is not doing: he's not making the kinds of mistakes the Nets made that put them in that dire situation: he's not trading away all his future assets to acquire veterans who are near the end of their productive years.
Tommy's on his 20th day of making moves with the Wizards roster. It took Brooklyn years to recover from the mess Billy King left them in. I hate to say it, but it's going to take the Wizards years too.

I normally think Zach Lowe is great, but his takes about the Wizards have been really awful this offseason.
He's even contemplating the ridiculous idea of packaging Beal with Wall in a trade. That's the dumbest idea in the world and it keeps getting repeated.
