CNN debuts new polling standards as 2020 race heats up

Pretty good policy being instituted by CNN that all media outlets should emulate - Fox News will not do this.

There is not one correct way to answer the 16 questions that make up our standards questionnaire, but there are some things that have not met CNN's standards for reporting in the past and will not now. And there are some new, clear lines that define the way polls should be done today. We will not cover:

-Polls that are conducted by campaigns or by those who have a financial or advocacy interest in the outcome
-Polls that are conducted by telephone using robocalls rather than live interviewers
-Polls that are conducted without any type of sampling, where anyone who chooses to can participate
-Polls that are conducted solely using unrepresentative sample sources
-Polls that are conducted without accounting for people who take surveys on their cellphones, either over the phone or by web
-Polls on some topics which do not ensure that respondents of all education levels are adequately reflected

We take seriously our responsibility to report polling carefully.

It's not nearly so simple. There isn't actually a perfect political party out there. The entire point of having competitive parties is to have them balance each other out and offer reasonable alternatives and essentially maintain a certain sense of competition. There are lots of problems with the Democratic Party that need to be balanced and it isn't hard to point them out. The problem is that the Republican Party as an institution and a large part of their voter base has abandoned any attempt at balancing the problems within the Democratic Party and are running in completely different directions. The odd part is that the large part of the voter base and the institution itself appear to be attempting to run in different directions while chained together as in a 3-legged race.

There actually are reasons not to vote for the Democratic Party right now, and at one of probably the worst possible times to crater, the Republicans are absolutely cratering and basically making a giant cut and run cash grab at the expense of the non-rich, other countries and future generations and attempting to force a zero sum game where there doesn't have to be one. And a ridiculously small amount of Republican voters are actually interested in any semblance of trying to hold the party accountable other than through meaningless words where they essentially say that they hypothetically would do so if they got absolutely everything they wanted in their favor, didn't have to give any ground or support people they viewed as their enemies. This isn't a both sides issue. There are problems with both sides - that's true - but the Republicans Party has added an entirely new dimension to the problem.

I definitely think it’s a both parties issue. Although I usually vote R I have to hold my nose when I do so most of the time. D’s are worse in most ways but R’s deserve plenty of severe criticism for the Iraq war and out of control spending to name just two of the most recent mistakes.

Our system of government is unworkable because of several major SC decisions (thanks to D appointments) that allowed congress to spend money in areas previously reserved to the states and to buy votes of their favored constituents. The government was intended to have limited and enumerated powers but SC changed all that and now there is no going back. If you want to identify the single most influential cause of our government disfunction that was it IMO.
