KCP paid $34 million to be a Laker
Now that KCP has finalized a two-year contract with the Lakers, we can see precisely where he ended up betting on himself. He was offered a 4 year/$80 million deal by the Pistons for the 2017-18 to 2020-21 years.
https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2017/07/19/kentavious-caldwell-pope-detroit-pistons/490837001/
His actual contracts with the Lakers have been/are:
2017/18: $18 million/year
2018/19: $12 million/year
2019/20: $8 million/year
2020/21: $8 million a year
Total: 4 years/$46 million
That's not to say it wasn't worth it for him. Maybe playing for the Lakers is worth giving up $34 million dollars. Maybe the mild winters are worth it. Maybe having the chance to play on a competitive team his final year is worth it. Anyway, there is certainly no animosity from our side. It would've been an awful deal for us.

Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

The Galloway signing looks much better when one thinks of having KCP on the books for some $20M the next two years. I doubt our record over these last two years would have been any better with him. Letting him walk was one of SVG's smarter moves. We owe Rich Paul a thank you.

the cost of living in los angeles is double what living in detroit is, and that's not even factoring in state income tax.
i'm not sure KCP wanted specifically to go to LA, they just gave him the biggest one-year deal after he declined our offer.

Cost of living is less of a consideration when you can afford luxury anywhere, though.
To the majority of the human race it matters, not to someone making starter level NBA salary.

can't say SVG letting KCP walk away was one of his smarter moves when he and Bower were the idiots that offered it

didn't they turn that dumb idea into Galloway boban and lueur?

Man, lots of also-rans/discards trying to chase a c'ship with the Lakers on bargain-basement deals. Gonna be amusing should LAL fall short of the WCF.

KCP’s 80M offer was for 5 years, not 4.

I believe you, but considering the season length & the fact that half of it is spent on the road anyway I'd personally take the money.

4/60 or 5/80 were what was reported... he could/should have lost even more money than he did but the Lakers overpaid him to be there because of Lebron and Klutch screwed him out of that big deal with Detroit.

This, I never saw the intrigue in him.
Its baffling to me how much fanfare this guy had, and the amount of people that were so up in arms when he left. I still remember all the people saying, give him what he wants Detroit can't lose him for nothing.

I never understood it either. To me he was just another one of the “Ok, Joe, if you say so” picks where I gave Dumars the benefit of the doubt that he had better player analysis than the rest of us, because PLENTY of folks here wanted CJ McCollum, despite his injury, when KCP was picked.
