Adams and Gallo to Boston

Post#1 » by MoneyTalks41890 » Wed Jul 10, 2019 2:39 pm

Alright I've tossed this around in several threads but I wanted to make it its own thread to get some feedback. This is assuming a Russ deal at some point.

OKC out: Adams, Gallo, Nader

BOS out: Hayward, Langford, Yabusele, 2020 MIL 1st, 2022 BOS 1st

Nader would have to be sent separately as a min deal that can be absorbed without matching salary, but otherwise the money just barely works (have to wait 30 days for Langford to be movable).

Thunder take on Hayward's extra money, but he runs the same length as Adams and provides a stopgap wing. Romeo is the kind of talent that Presti loves to gamble on, and OKC seems to be in pick acquisition mode as well. Maybe OKC asks for Williams instead of the MIL pick. But this is a full on tank.

Celtics get a new frontcourt that fits perfectly with the rest of the team without giving up the Memphis pick.

(Russ)/SGA/Schroder
Ferg/Romeo/Roberson
Hayward/Diallo/Burton
Yabusele/Muscala/PPat
Noel

Kemba/Smart
Brown/Wanamaker
Tatum/Nader
Gallo/Theis/Semi
Adams/Kanter/Williams

I would do it. I really like Hayward and think he could turn it around this season but we have a major weakness in our front court which Adams would help with & I think Gallo can provide us a lot of what Hayward can. Plus, he's more suited for PF than Hayward (or Tatum) who were most likely going to be slotted in there.

I think the Celtics would need to make sure they are comfortable locking Brown into a long term deal though since Langford feels like Brown insurance, to some degree.

This would be a tremendous deal for Boston. I think OKC could get more for that package personally.

I like that Boston team more than the squad they had before Irving / Horford left.

Maybe they could. I would of course be on board with more value. But the way I see it, most proposed Gallo deals bring back a late first. Most Adams deals are just salary relief and a small asset. I'm higher on Romeo than most, but getting a lotto pick and two other picks while taking Hayward seems pretty close to the independent values of Adams and Gallo as seen by the board. And OKC doesn't need to clear the cap sheet, just get under the tax. This does that, and maybe Hayward rebounds and can be flipped again.

But for the sake of discussion, OKC adds the Denver 1st and instead of the MIL and BOS 1sts gets the MEM 1st.

My first reaction was the Celtics shouldn't be adding two firsts, but given the other comments seems a nice one.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Any chance OKC could get Brown instead of Langford and the picks?

So, the deal would look like:

OKC out: Adams, Gallo, Nader

BOS out: Hayward, Brown, Yabusele

Dont see Boston dealing as eager to deal Brown in a deal where Hayward also goes out.

This. Also, reports are indicating Yabusele is being waved so this trade kind of goes to hell. It's amazing that Yabu would somehow prevent a deal like this from getting done now

Damn, that's unfortunate. His money was just enough to make it work.

Langford and SGA would be a hell of a future backcourt. Add in Winslow from a Russ trade and you have a nice 1-3 to start over with a whole bundle of picks.

Also love for Boston. Kemba, Brown, Tatum, Gallo, Adams with Smart, Kanter off the bench would be pretty nasty. That team could make the finals.

Don’t want to give up on Hayward when he’s finally 2 years removed from the injury (which is around when PG started to really turn the corner. Also, giving up a lottery pick (Langford) and 2 additional 1sts along with what should be a healthy Hayward (was a bonafide Star before the injury) for 2 overpaid players seems like terrible value for the Celtics. I don’t see Adams as a positive value on his contract. He’s a mediocre rebounder, a decent defender, and a nonexistent passer/scorer outside of the paint. $53.5M over the next 2 years is way more than what he’s worth. Galinari is always injured on a massive expiring contract that holds negative value.

The Celtics will only save $5-6M in cap space next offseason if they let Galinari walk while the Thunder save a boatload this year. If Hayward is healthy (and this year and next he should be), it’d take multiple 1sts from OKC to turn 2 overpaid mediocre players into a star in his prime who will make far less over the next 2 seasons than those 2 combined. With old-school mediocre big men finding big contracts impossible to come by nowadays, I’d take Hayward’s potential to return to star-form over Adams even in a straight-up swap. Adding the picks/Langford and taking on Galinari makes this pretty brutal.

I understand that until he plays again, Hayward has negative value. However, I think Adams’ value is comparably negative while Galinari is a big negative as well. With Hayward’s ceiling being so much higher than either of the 2 by simply getting healthy, I don’t see any reason the Celtics consider this. If you are trying to turn Hayward into another star right now, adding a lottery pick we just took along with 2 1sts may make sense. However, turning him into 2 overpaid players who lower the ceiling of our team shouldn’t cost 3 1sts (at least one in the lottery).

This is the type of package that OKC received for PG with Galinari used to match salaries, except in this scenario they get comparable assets and most likely end up with the best player in the deal. If this is the best we can get for Hayward, a lottery pick, and 2 additional 1sts, then holding on to him is a no brainer. We’d be 100 times better off trading him next offseason when he’s expiring (or potentially a FA if he has a bounce back year like most expect and declines his PO) with picks for a superstar like the Clippers did for PG.

This deal has zero upside for the C’s. Moving 3 1sts for any non-superstar while dumping a guy who could be the best player on the roster this season is a nonstarter. I’m surprised C’s fans seem open to the idea considering how lately the value of bigs that can’t shoot or pass at all has plummeted and Galinari is rarely healthy.

Seems too good for OKC and I'm surprised to see some of the reactions. Gallo's a rental and while I like Adams, he's way overpaid. Plus 2 firsts? I dunno.

Doubt either of those firsts would be particularly valuable. I’d do it personally

Yeah as you can see this happened post post. But I think Semi and Wanamaker would still work too. OKC can send their min guys without needing matching salary after that.

I really don't want any part of Haywards contract.

Two of his three guarenteed years are already over, how exactly does it hamstring OKC? If anything if he shows he's remotely close to the Utah Hayward he's going to opt out or they could prob move him. They aren't chasing a title, so what's the difference between having him or Adams on the books?

He’s no longer that player, and he’s not opting out, but that’s what they comp is for. I have no problem taking his deal here. We aren’t signing anyone

I really like that deal for both teams. Think Boston should be all over that. Would give them one of the best starting 5 in the league.
