He might be one of the more valuable expiring deals in the league. The money is workable, he is a good locker room guy and I think he can fit on both a rebuilding team or a contender.

I have a feeling something big is going to happen and it will be out of left field.

Anyone remember that first summer league game he played? Man he looked good, he hit a pull up 3 for Christ’s sake.

Who woulda thought that would be his career best

After that game I thought he was going to be a Pippen like point forward who excelled on D.

He's still a liability beyond the arc, but for the first time since his shoulder injuries he actually showed some improvement last season. He shot a career high percentage from the free throw line as well. If he actually gets decent playing time next season and takes another step forward he might still be able to find a place in the league.

the biggest travesty with MKG is that we failed to put shooters around him....he would have excelled in that environment as a PF

MKG was the only player the team drafted in that timeframe who started most games during his first year.

I'm firmly convinced that this was one factor in the problems that came later. Guys like Kemba got to get reps against 2nd units and build confidence. MKG was anchoring defenses and having angry starters going after him on offense. The Cliff shame corner thing only made it worse. I don't want to take his own agency away either. I think that he got into his own head after a while too.

In any event MKG is a textbook case on how player development can fail.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

He was played out of position (he is a PF), put in the shame corner and never learned how to shoot. On top of injuries

A series of unfortunate events.

He wasn't played out of position. He just cant shoot. Not for a 3, 4, or even 5 these days.

Agreed. He was drafted into a league that had already passed him by

How much playing time do MKG get this upcoming season? Do he get 15-20 minutes per game as a backup or do he fall down to DNP-CD status completely out of the rotation?

I dont think he will be on the team.

I don’t see any team trading for his expiring contract without giving Charlotte a lesser player in return on a longer contract. I hope he get traded because I doubt he’s a part of the rotation and I feel like he could contribute as a defender on a contending team but it’s just unlikely.

I pity the contending team that thinks they can extract value out of MKG. He's not too far from your neighborhood YMCA. YMCA-MKG

Every time this thread gets bumped I expect to see a WoJ or Shams tweet saying he's been traded.

I don't ever expect a GM to want him. Talent evaluators across the league wide-and-far have years of scouting on MKG and it's not like the Hornets have been shy about moving him. They know what he is and it's conclusive. To all of a sudden pounce on him seems counterintuitive. Why wait so long? They never needed a stealth plan to outsmart the Hornets and poach him from them. All they had to do was call up and ask. Yet no team has ever been rumored to be interested in MKG. I would've liked to see at least one legit rumor of interest but, nothing.

buyout in feb. until then, he'll fall in and out of rotation like last year.

Return to Charlotte Hornets
