Re: OT: TV and Movies (with spoilers)
Beta was better but Sony charged a licensing fee while JVC didn't charge for their VHS technology. So lots of companies made VHS and they were cheaper. Plus their tapes were longer.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.
Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

I remember when beta and VHS were in competition, bruh.
Beta is the superior technology
Of course it was and is. Technology doesn’t always work that way, actually it often doesn’t - see natural gas refrigerators.

I had the audio version of Laserdisc, the Sony MiniDisc.

I went all in on MiniDisk when iPod first came out. I was assuming that people wanted to buy physical copies of albums while also getting digital versions. So wrong.
Please reconsider your animal consumption.

So my dad as an educator had access to a library of laserdisks before I even knew what they were. But we used them when I was in, maybe, 2nd grade? to cut up a video to make a presentation about whales and record it on VHS.
Then he gets it in his head that laserdisk is gonna be the Next Big Thing and he subscribed to one of those old school CD clubs but for laserdisk and he ended up with like 30 movies. They looked great! but holy god that was super not a tech that took off. I didn't know of another person with it.
So in the end it ended up being how I learned what whacking off was with the sex scene in The Terminator.

Right there with yah. I had the Panasonic mini disc with mini controller on the headphone cable. I took it everywhere I went kept 2 or 3 mini discs in pockets. Amazing sound quality, digital just doesn't seem as good.midranger wrote:I went all in on MiniDisk when iPod first came out. Before I joined the Army, I was at the recruiting office watching infomercials for different mos's (job classifications). Fun times, but not nearly as fun as jamming through microfiche at the Brown County library searching for birth records... I was adopted.ReasonablySober wrote:None of you bitches and your sh*t tech has anything on the LASERDISK.
Probably the biggest wow factor tech was early 1980ish. My dad was going to purchase two Harvestore's. Those fancy looking blue high tech food stuff storage silos. The sales rep came to our kitchen and showed us the promo videos from a briefcase.
Then early 90's rolled around with whispers of the Japanese watching tv on their phones. What a world!!
Wifi, Bluetooth and then Pokemon Go.
I was talking with a couple of young colleagues a few days ago about how our favorite challenge in Jr High was seeing how fast we could start and stop our Armitron watches timers. We also had pencil wars, and modified Stompers with weights, extra batteries, and multiple motors for pulling and racing contests. I got pretty good with a soldering gun.
I needs shades for this future thing we owning.....

In my day, I played Pong on a black and white mini TV. It had a ‘Zoom’ button on its little remote. I loved watching ‘The Price is Right’ with grandma and pressing that ‘Zoom’ which negligibly closed in on the midsections and scoreboards of the contestants. It was a Zenith TV. I can still hear Edna yell: ‘Joseph, quit it you Yacko!’.
She also had a sign at her old folks community pool that read: “Welcome to our Ool. Notice there is no ‘P’ in it”. Classic.

Yikes, the singing in "The Lion King" looks awful. You lose to much soul going the photo-realistic route.

I have. I'm also not aware of anyone else who watches it though. To me, it's been fine. Generally worth watching if you're into the gangster drug dealing type of stuff. I'd say it's fine but I'm also not going around telling all my friends they "have to" watch it either. I think it's going down a good path overall and could end up being really good so I'm sticking with it and hopefully the new season is good. So, I know that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement but if this type of show generally interest you I'm sure you'll be satisfied and won't regret it.
Thanks. That sounds right up my alley and I saw John Singleton was a creator which, I mean, come on. Dude has been at the helm for three of my all-timers (Boyz n the Hood, Baby Boy, Hustle & Flow).
Re: who watches it. I saw a status about the new season on FB which prompted me to ask, but I generally don't align much with the person's taste
I also did the new Kevin Bacon Showtime show City on the Hill. Think it's about 4 episodes in so far and seems pretty good to me. Has a lot of the elements we're used to seeing in this type of how. I'd recommend
Resident Lillard truther since 2015.

Bit late on this show - Was watching "The Haunting of Hill House" and there was a part in episode 4 that gave me the most creeped out chills I've ever had.
