I would love to see New York Knicks trade for him - then they would be a legitimate playoff team and next year might even pick a good player in free agency

Makes no sense to trade him to the heat... they already own the heats draft picks and this would just make them a better team and worse picks.
...

Detroit makes the most sense, and i'm a detroit fan, although I'm frightened and excited. I wouldn't give up that much for him though.
...

I'd personally like to see him sent to the Houston Rockets. Out west. Imagine trying to see Russ and Harden fight over who gets the shot.

Too much time has passed since word of the potential move leaked out and now. I think each side is asking for too much and it's going to stall things like the trade with the Mavs.

Ah but while the 2021 pick is unprotected, the 2023 pick is lottery protected for 3 consecutive seasons. It seems likely that Butler will push the Heat into the playoffs for at least the next two seasons, making that first pick a likely non-lottery pick. It also seems likely that Butler will eventually breakdown health-wise sometime during his current contract with the Heat, which would make the 2023 pick more likely to be in the lottery and thus protected for up to 3 years. With Butler's and Westbrook's injury history there's a good chance both of them could be way past their prime by 2023, and the Heat could easily end up in the lottery that year, even with both of them on the roster. And they could be even worse in the years after. If Miami were to agree to remove the pick protection, it would free up the 2025 or 2026 pick, and the unprotected 2023 pick would be much more valuable, or they could flip the pick protection, making the 2023 pick protected 15-30 in 2023 (unprotected in 2024) and still include the 2026 pick (unprotected). And they could include pick swaps in any years between. Since OKC controls the pick, it's a unique trade opportunity to change the pick protection to add massive trade value. It would make a ton of sense for OKC, and it would be a nice gamble by Miami.

What about the Raptors? You can trade it for Lowry. Add a 1st round and it could work.

Lowry is 33 and makes 30+ million per year... not exactly the type of player a rebuilding team wants to take on.

Expiring contract of a veteran all star than you can trade to a contender before the deadline and a first round pick.

You mean a 1st Rounder from OKC to Toronto right?

Kyle Lowry at 33 million has negative trade value. Toronto would need to trade a 1st round pick with Lowry just to get rid of that contact. Even for a title contender he's not a very attractive asset. Nobody is going to give away young talent or draft picks for half a season of Kyle Lowry... and that's exactly what OKC would be looking for.

Expiring deals are almost never negative. They are valuable, since they can be traded to teams with multi-year albatross type contracts and net a draft asset for taking on that future salary. He would be even more valuable to a contender if they had an albatross contract to unload and a need at PG.
