Previously Rob Williams played when Yabu played and they both seemed to get in each others way. IMO Rob plays better with Grant Williams.

Starting Kemba-Hayward-Brown-Tatum-Kanter leaves you with a glut of shooters on offense, which was one of the issues early last season. Starting WIlliams in place of Kanter could alleviate some of that but I don't really think Williams is ready to start.
Theis is probably the best starting option. He's a mild threat from the arc, a beefier body than RWIII for bodying guys and rebounding, and he can perform about as well as a garbage man in the short term.
But I'm thinking we assured Kanter a pretty big role to get him on the room.
Kanter ended up primarily a bench guy for his last three teams and probably saw opportunity here, but I think also knows what's what at this point. It makes zero sense for the C's to promise a potentially undeserved role either with Rob coming along or after the resentments re: Hayward last season. Instead, after eight years in the league Kanter probably pretty well understands his role in the league and is fine with it.
Last night was the first time this week it really looked realistic to envision Rob potentially being ready to start after the rest of his work this summer, the heavy team scrimmages in the latter summer, and a full preseason of games. It also looks like he's well beyond his knee problems (at least for now). That's pretty exciting for the team and its possibilities this season, because if he can start from the start this season he will be ready to start in the postseason. And that could make this team formidable. If Kanter comes off the bench that does a lot for the team's balance on O and D--both with the starters and the bench.
Theis could end up as situational and third-string depth IMO.

Why though? His standing reach and wingspan are both plenty good for a center, especially with his explosive athleticism.
I totally agree he needs to add some weight, but I think that will naturally come with time as he matures.

Laziest 16/16/4 in 21 minutes I've ever seen. Why doesn't this guy ever try hard?

Hey there is a video with Rob saying he has lost weight on purpose this summer and he will put some good weight on later this summer with help from the Celtics staff.

Williams is still out of position a lot.. His rebounds was a good sign. But kanter isn't really defensive.

I don’t know what you want to call it - motor, drive, self awareness, BBIQ, - RW’s approach is nowhere close to KG and KG had so much talent he could get away with being lazy if he ever wanted to. Offensively, RW can keep it simple for a few years and that won’t matter so much. However, if he can use his length, speed and hops to just be everywhere 80% of the way KG was......he’ll be a huge asset. The talent to be that guy is there. Just haven’t seen the focus in SL yet.
I agree. I feel like Defense is about 15% physical gifts, 15% instincts and 70% effort. He has the physical gifts. He may never have KG's instincts. But there's no reason he couldn't give a KG effort.
I brings the ruckus to the ladies!

FutureIsGreen wrote:I feel that with Robbie it's that highschool and NCAA was just to easy to be dominant so he was not ready to face players of the same calibre as himself in the NBA. Once you arrive and struggle a bit for the first time in years it causes a bit of doubt in the mind which leads to overthinking. Once he settles down and gets back to playing well for a small stretch the game will slow back down for him and he will dominate. Just has to keep working hard and he will be just fine going forward.
This is how I feel about Rob as well. He had it so easy in high school and college with his incredible length and athleticism advantage, that he's developed some really bad habits seemingly intentionally putting himself in less than ideal defensive positions almost to bait the offensive player into attempting a shot.
Scal mentioned something similar to this during one of the first SL games: he noted how Time Lord often creates an open lane to the hoop when guarding the pick and roll on switches, like he's goading the offensive player into taking it strong to the basket so he can challenge him. Against NBA players this is going to result in more fouls and broken team defense than highlight blocks compared to HS and NCAA.
I also notice this same behavior when rebounding and in general protecting the paint. He needs to stop baiting players (giving the impression that he's not fully aware/dialed in on the defensive play) only to attempt heroics at the rim.
The good news IMO is that these habits can be broken pretty easily and I have already seen marked improvements during SL play.
I think RW fits well with the starters as a low-usage rebounder and rim protector, who can keep the ball moving and finish at a high % at the rim. Keep the fould under control and play smarter, disciplined, fundamental defense and he can be a huge asset for us this year.

Re: Let's talk Robert Williams
I did not see him massively out of place much. Ues, he definitely goads guys to go at the rim and he needs to be careful with that when its the real season but for the most part he saw the floor well on D.
He is clearly a little uncomfortable stepping out and guarding on the perimeter, which he has the tools to do but will need the reps to work on. That is where I think he needs the most development on D, frankly.
On O, so long as he keeps the jump shots to 1 a game, he will be a hyper efficient, low usage guy, which we kind of need given the demand from so many other guys for touches.

Re: Let's talk Robert Williams
Come on people! I guess Tony Bradley is the 2nd coming of Duncan with his 20/10/3 on 26 MPG over the summer league while being younger than Rob. Gobert should look out too, right?
Rob had a better showing than his previous games stats wise but he really hasn't shown anything that screams a starter next season or even regular back up center. His passing is the only thing that has looked very solid so far.

RWIII is averaging 13/11/3 in 20 MPG. His passing and rebounding has really impressed me this summer.

Is it crazy to talk about him starting in the regular season?
He looks like a man amongst boys out there tonight. Is this the sign he’s turning the corner?
that's because MEM was guarding him with the 6'7" 200 lb Brandon Clarke and a couple of career G-Leaguers. People have got to keep things in perspective. The teams we've faced so far in Summer have awful SL rosters. Either they have no great young prospects period, or they aren't playing them. We're like a college team facing high school teams. And it's giving people a false sense of how good our players are.

Cool I read he had great game. My main internet has been down couple days. So using pocket WiFi and it is not working good. Not even seen the highlights of the game on YouTube yet. Love my life and time in Asia! God willing I will work out the bugs soon. Go Celtics!!Big Joke Line wrote:cloverleaf wrote:Tiny ball wrote:I have seen this guy loafing too often.
It was presumably him diving to the floor so many times in the 2nd game that led to the hip contusion that kept him out last night.
I don't worry about him playing hard. I do agree that the C's coaching staff is likely not the best for teaching him the tricks in scoring down low.
He had a nice jump hook tonight.

Yah, but the game made me feel much better about my “Brandon Clarke is just a smaller Robert Williams” take

I'm not big Brad fan but he seems to find a way to get bigs to the right spot put both arms straight up jump straight up and it works with the rules today.TheTruth316 wrote:Williams is still out of position a lot.. His rebounds was a good sign. But kanter isn't really defensive.
At this point in time I just don't think we need to worry about Kanters defense. Get home court advantage and see what happens.
He has bad game sit him.
