Not a good game for the Dream. Dallas won 71-61

So the Atlanta Dream are playing a teensy-bit better of late!

They go into this afternoon's game at State Farm Arena against the Los Angeles Sparks (3 PM Eastern, online locally via WSB NOW, NBATV outside of ATL) seeking out their fourth win in the past five contests while escaping from last-place (5-10) in a parity-filled league still hampered by superstar injuries. Aside from Las Vegas, the other 11 WNBA clubs are just 5-5 or worse over their past ten games, leaving the Dream just 2.5 games out of the final playoff spot.

The Ogwumike Sisters, Nneka and Chiney, are scheduled to play for coach Derek Fisher's club, but L.A. (8-7) will fight to stay above .500 without the legendary Candace Parker (ankle) and defensive stalwart Alana Beard (hammy).

A handful of WNBA players continue to thrive on the floor while ducking legal issues, including Riquna Williams (under investigation for domestic violence and assault), the re-signed free agent guard who gets big minutes in an instant-offense role for Fisher, the coach with some sketchy backstories himself, prior to his hiring.

Nicki Collen's crew still has fundamental flaws on offense, but they've managed to find moments in games where they get out of their own way. None more so than this little record-tying spurt last week from Brittney Sykes while Atlanta was on the road:

Elizabeth Williams is also coming around, no longer settling for weakside blocks and offensive rebounds. Her return as an interior offensive target ought to keep the Ogwumikes attached inside for much of the game, thus requiring some small-s sparks from the perimeter, via Tiffany Hayes and Renee Montgomery, if Atlanta intends to pull off their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Battle of D.C.! While the Dream, blown out in Connecticut a couple days ago, is a big underdog with their matchup underway against a face-masked Elena Delle Donne and the Mystics (3 PM Eastern, WSB NOW online for ATLiens, NBATV elsewhere), hopefully the 3-way matchup today versus teams from The District (the Uniteds of MLS playing at 4 PM, Bravos 'n Nats later) will yield at least 2 victories for the home squads.

"And with the 4th pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, The Atlanta Dream select..."

There's not much in the way of quick-fix tanking anymore in the W. Not after former Dream superfan turned ex-Commissioner Lisa Borders instituted a calculation of the two most recent seasons to determine draft lottery odds for teams, like Atlanta (league-worst 5-18, but 23-11 last year, so 28-29 combined). By comparison, their hosts today, the Indiana Fever (3 PM Eastern, CBS Sports Network) are having one of their best seasons since Tamika Catchings retired (8-16). But they will likely miss the playoffs, and they were 6-28 last season, too, so their superior Lottery odds will only get better if the Dream trip them up today.

Atlanta had a chance to interrupt their losing streak, now at 8 games and counting, in Indy ten days ago. But former Dream guard turned WNBA All-Star Game MVP Erica Wheeler would have none of it. Her layup with under 12 seconds to go clinched the 61-59 win for the Fever, and Atlanta has not come anywhere near as close to victory since.

With the road trip continuing on to Vegas and Phoenix next week, one has to wonder, is there one more win left in the Dream's schedule this month, after today? Angel McCoughtry, who is openly expressing her frustrations with team management, isn't coming to save this floundering group in 2019. It's likely that Sabrina Ionescu won't be coming next year, either.
