What happened to Roy Hibbert? Did the pace and space era phase him out?

Post#1 » by OkcSinceSGA » Sun Jul 14, 2019 4:16 pm

He was a legit defensive anchor and high impact guy. He retired at just 31 years old (is now 32). Did the league just pass him by? Was it an injury issue?

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-the-nba-abandoned-roy-hibbert/

''His ability to jump straight up and rarely be whistled for fouls allowed Indiana to play an extremely aggressive style of defense, in which the Pacers played out on the perimeter to eliminate 3-point shots without really worrying whether an opposing player might get a path to the basket. If that happened, Hibbert would be there to clean up the mess.

With that Hibbert-centric scheme, the Pacers led the league in defensive efficiency in 2012-13 and 2013-14, according to NBA Advanced Stats. They held opponents to a meager 97 points per 100 possessions each season while making back-to-back conference-finals trips in the process. The big man finished among the league’s top five in blocks and defensive win shares both years, while holding close-range shooters almost 16 percentage points beneath their average field goal percentage in 2013-14, a rate that easily led the NBA that season.''
“This kid reminds me of a 6-6 Chris Paul. He wants to win everything.”

i think he was the most overrated player on this decade. His offense was always so trash, he had seasons where he barely scored more points than he had shot attempts... as a center!!! Go back and check his stats, do it now, his touch around the rim was pathetic, the worst among all NBA centers hands dow, but no one ever talked about it because its such a gimmie skill in the NBA, and because he had one matchup, one guy he always played very well against and thats what people remembered - Chris Bosh.

This guy Roy Hibbert would be atrocious for 6 months, but playoff time he would match up against the Heat and Chris Bosh at center and dominate, Bosh just couldnt box out him, couldnt do it, Roy was his kryptonite, and fans would always tune on for the playoffs, see Roy Hibbert dominate offensive glass in Eastern conference finals, and they proclaimed him a star. He was never a star, he was a nishe one way player and thats it.

^this. His breakout came against undersized CB but since it was against LeBron's Miami he got media hype

Demand of the type of defense from centers went from verticality only to mobility and verticality.

a mediocre overrated player valued only for his size in an era when size mattered. a shift in play phased him out since size is all he had. he was a ponderous no talent

Clearly something happened behind the scenes that led to some form of depression or feeling of alienation. There's too much noise about the Paul George story for it not to be true imo. Hibbert was a defensive anchor until he wasn't, and it happened suddenly.

The birth of the pace and space era played a major factor as well. But I believe a lot of it was mental.

In all seriousness, pace and space really did kill his game. His rim protection gave even prime Lebron and NY Melo serious trouble, but the Hawks took that same team to seven games in the first round partially because Roy couldn't guard Horford all the way out to the three point line.

Not according to them. PG/Hibbert posted a picture of them hanging out together and denying it on Instagram.

Also I believe the rumor started on a website where women share information about NBA players (where they hang out/ turn ons, ect.) to help women get pregnant by them so they can get child support.
