He came here last year before the trade for Kawhi.Kevin Willis wrote:MixxSRC wrote:Toronto can't keep its talent. Tell me something new.
Handy likes working with and developing superstar talent. He liked working with Lebron and he came here to work with Kawhi. Kawhi left, so he's gone to work with a superstar in LA AND he gets a promotion.
Be happy for him, he helped us get a championship. Also understand it's nothing personal, he likes to work with superstars.

Yep. He was aware of the trade possibility. I read it in an article, I will see if I can find it today if I have time. It was either going to be Demar or Kawhi.
Edit: Actually he was hired after the trade. He only came after Kawhi was a Raptor.

He is basically our personal Rico. He will be missed, let's see who replaces him.

Re: Lakers Hire Phil Handy
Last thing - here's an article about the work Handy did with Kawhi. He really improved his game and most likely if the Lakers didn't hire him, the Clippers eventually could have. He has an excellent relationship with athletes and improved Kawhi's game here.

MLSE pay the **** up.
No. Unless we fired one of our assistants and moved him to the front of the bench theres nothing we could do. Lakers job is a promotion
So what is Jason Kidd? Co-Head Coach?
No, Vogel and him are LeBron's assistants...

He was with the Lakers before. Strong ties to Kobe, LeBron from Cleveland, Pelinka, etc. He’s definitely one of the best and I’m glad we got him.
How crazy is it that Kobe’s barely teenage daughter gets to work out with one of the best development coaches in basketball lmao

He's one of the best Player Dev. coaches in the league; was instrumental in helping Kawhi, Pascal & OG improve their dribbling/crossover moves in isolation. That's his specialty, helped Kyrie & LeBron in Cleveland in that regard as well.
How do you figure he was responsible for Siakam when he, as a coach, cannot work with Siakam over the summer. Siakam was working with Rico Hines. And he came into camp with those skills.
Leonard was a complete ISO player already but if you want to give him credit for that... ok.
Never said he was solely responsible, it's widely known of Rico's work with Pascal in the summer. Handy worked a lot with Siakam during the season, there's footage. Kawhi's handle has dramatically improved this season, Phil took the job specifically to work with him and did so to improve that aspect of his game. Those 3 saw improvements in those particular aspects of their game, was it all credit to Handy? Absolutely not. Was he instrumental in helping them take the next step in that particular area of their respective games? Considering his niche is in developing dribbling/crossover/advanced offensive moves, think it's safe to say he had his fair share in furthering their respective development in that regard.

Interesting to see what happens to some of the other AC's. A few of them seem to be missing - https://www.nba.com/raptors/mlsel-management

Not certain, but I don't think that page was updated since last summer. The Roster page on the website has the other guys on there. Perhaps all the new guys do have 1 year deals and we'll see. Griffin was with the team during SL. And this job is perfect for Scariolo because the Raps let him do his national team stuff during the season. Bjorgren is Nurse's best friend so he'll stay.

Re: Lakers Hire Phil Handy
he won't be doing player development if he's promoted to the bench assistant coach now.
i mean that's what people do, they leave their old job behind so they can develop other skills. I'm sure Phil doesn't want to be a player development coach his entire career.
you just have to go find another assistant who is great at player development.
and Griffin sits next to Nurse. he's already at the highest level of assistant coaches in the NBA. unless his contract is not renewed or another team comes in and swoops him at the end of his contract for a much better one that the Raptors won't match, he's here for the foreseeable near future.

Yeah and what better assistant coaching role to be the lead assistant for the NBA Champions so unless Griffin gets a HC job, he likely will stay. Every other stop Griffin has been had labeled him as the "defensive coordinator". Nurse uses a different philosophy with his front row coaches in that he allows them to lead offence, defence, and special teams at different parts of the year and rotate with the other coaches. I'm sure Griffin like this part of it so he can work on his offensive side of coaching (and what better way than to have offensive gurus in Nurse and Scariolo to learn off of).

Exactly, the Raptors coaching staff have been great at developing young players for a long time now. Handy was only here for a year so it's not like he's the main reason the developmental staff is elite, some of you guys are so overdramatic

The only reason we got him is because Lebron couldn't get him to the Lakers last year.

Rich paul was accused of trying to recruit an assistant to join vogels staff during the playoffs (he denied it). If its true it was probably handy lol
