We had this until I was 11 or 12. We couldn't put it in the living room so it went in my parents' bedroom. We would either lay in their bed and watch TV or go in the basement where it would be bearable. Or we would go outside and hook up the hose to the sprinkler or just spray each other with the hose.

My apartment now has central air and I wouldn't live here if it didn't because I have a 20 foot long and 6 foot high West facing window and the sun starts to come in at around 2 and continues to shine in until the sun goes down so it's like 6 hours of heat just coming in. Even when I leave I have to keep the air on so it's not like 85 when I get back.

So you'd get all hot, get in bed with your folks, then hose yourselves down?
At a party given by a billionaire, Kurt Vonnegut informs Joseph Heller that their host had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his novel Catch-22.

Heller responds, “Yes, but I have something he will never have — ENOUGH.”

Get hosed down first. Make every thing all slippy and slidy.

Worst situation I had was when I was around 14 years old and we stayed in a great grandparent's old place in Auburndale for a summer, right next to the train track. Tiny ass little sh*thole. We put the AC in my brother and mine's room and most nights all five of us would sleep in there with three people on the floor.

But I think the hardest time I've had is a couple years here in EC lately where the AC was a ceiling fan, or the first two years in a recent place before I realized I could install a window AC unit. Now I've got central air again and life is sweet (and expensive).

Ceiling fans are the most useless things in the world. All they do is blow hot air around.

....can't beat that but my parents didn't get an air conditioner until the year after I had moved away for college. I don't remember ever giving much thought to it either. AC doesnt matter if you aren't used to having it.

Ceiling fans aren't made to combat 90+ degree temps by themselves but they can definitely make 80 and less feel better.

80 and less is already comfortable, so like I said, useless.

When I was a kid we used to put a big bowl of ice in front of a fan. That was our a/c.

My bachelor party is this weekend near the Dells. Place has a pond/mini-lake they dug out themselves and I'm super pumped. But this heat + all the booze is about to be hell.

That sucks because you probably want to enjoy that setup. I guess you'll be doing a lot of standing in the actual lake to cool off.

I went to one last year in Chicago during last year's heat wave (I think just after July 4?) and am going again to Chicago during this year's heat wave. Outdoor activities were planned but obviously you can just go into air conditioning in a bar or the place you're staying for a while. Probably unlikely, but hopefully the place you're going has AC in it?

Yup, I didn't experience sleeping with AC until I got to UWM. What a relief. Since then I spent two years in San Antonio, and that was pretty sweet except for 2-3 weeks in summer.

Later moved to Waikiki, did five years, hopped in the ocean at least twice a week there, but the traffic chased me away.

Vegas is pretty nasty now, but where else can you go snow boarding in the morning, and jet skiing in the afternoon?

At that point, when it's a bunch of dudes who are all in it together, it's not an issue. Everyone's sweating but enjoying themselves so who really cares. Those situations are fine.

The **** that sucks is going to social events where no physical activity is occurring but you're still sweating your balls off and trying to maintain composure/hide your pit stains while interacting w/ people.

Bachelor parties around the Dells could end up at Chubbys which may qualify as a social interaction.

I guess for me it is the feeling of death and legitimate health concerns when drinking your face off in 100 degree heat. Things will probably be fine but anyone over the age of 25 likely needs 3-4 days to recover from that. Social interaction I don't really care as much anymore if I am sweating to death. Everyone's dealing with that one.

Once my kids move out I'm heading to Reno. I want to be in Lake Tahoe every day in the summer.
