Is Matt Costello the next Bill Laimbeer?
Suffering from immense basketball withdrawals, I found some temporary relief watching this past Summer League. Any basketball beats the hell out of watching any baseball game, no matter how juiced up the balls are. Yet so, when word came that Sekou Doumbouya and Jordan Bone couldn't participate in the first game, I wasn't as fired up about watching this Pistons team.
Enter Matt Costello. Granted, he isn't the most glamorous player. He just does the dirty stuff on the court and from all indications, he's got some basketball smarts. No slam against our current center but then again... How cool was it watching a big man actually rolling to the basket on the Pick and roll? And converting a smooth layup...not a slam dunk or some fadeaway. Costello missed some shots but the man has touch and has been gifted with surprisingly good hands. Then, he found some confidence in his 3 point shooting! Kinda reminded me of a young Bill Laimbeer!
Costello's fundamental game, whether on defense or offense has Izzo written all over it. He gets to the line and shoots a decent FT%. On top of that, the cat is fearless and has that charismatic look. And from what I could tell, his mates feed off his energy. It's all the things that made big Bill the player he was and ultimately shaped the Bad Boys.
I'm gonna say he should be considered seriously as the backup center. Thoughts? Am I crazy?

No. not even close. the problem with Costello is all his fouls he would foul out in 10 min.

I think LaSheed was directing his reply to the TS.
He does foul a lot because he's not athletic enough to guard NBA caliber bigs. I do think SL refs called a lot more fouls both because these rookies need to know who's boss - there ain't no superstar calls in Summer League, and because they have 10 fouls you can ticky-tack them without having them foul out.

Raise your hand if you get a "Prince of Darkness" vibe from Matt Costello.

Well, sure. He's exactly like Lambeer in the sense neither are going to be NBA players going forward.

There are numerous lurkers out there, I'm sure. I post in bursts, get irritated with the team or with particular posters, and then disappear for another six months.

Long story short, NO!
He’s not even the summer league Bill Laimbeer.

I was actually on board with giving him a camp invite in a free-for-all for the backup center spot until we got wood...
that being said, this is ridiculous. bill is a legend. Costello hasn’t been able to stick on an nba roster.
