Theis is better than he showed last year when he was playing injured.

This is from Adam Himmelsbach's new Poirier article:

The Celtics have thrived over the years with big men such as Kelly Olynyk and Horford — and later, even Baynes — who are capable of stepping out and hitting 3-pointers, thus opening the floor for their ballhandlers.

Kanter, Poirier, and second-year big man Robert Williams are not perimeter shooters, however, so the development of Theis, who made 38.8 percent of his 3-pointers last season on just 68 total attempts, could be essential.

Theis has shown promise during his two years with the Celtics, but a knee injury two years ago that was followed by a foot injury last year limited him-

Theis on heavy minutes in rhythm is a high quality big.

We kept Gordons's best friend on the team, confirmed MVP year by Hayward. HYPEEEEE.

Yeah, I thought this was a slam dunk once it was known they did not need to renounce his rights. Essential is an apt word to use in terms of his fit with the other big man options until another shooting big emerges. (Referencing Gant's post)

Yes, I believe he had a plantars fasciitis issue last season. That's probably what slowed him down. If that's gone, he should be much better this season.

When the season is over, I suspect Theis will be our big in crunch time. He has the most complete game, though I'm not sure he can sustain it for more than 20 MPG. His spacing, bounciness, and switchability on D are not easily matched by any of Williams, Kanter or Poirier.

Matchup dependent, however.

Sure - but where we can try to dictate matchup, I think it will be Theis, or hopefully Timelord.

He is our only real 4, would be an ideal 5 for our system if he was a little bigger, he is not 30, he could get a bit better but I see him getting around 20 mins per game for us, he does everything well except for rebounding which he is ok at. He can shoot from distance and block shots, that is a combo that is rare.

hope he's totally healthy. When he first came in he was an asset. Last year was off and on, usually off. His nick name is Tra.
middle name D. Last name Ballast.

Am I the only one not impressed with Theis?

He's a very limited in skill, energy player, he can't defend real bigs. Maybe around 1 or 2 million per year max as 3rd string.

Poirier, Tacko Fall, Robert Wiliams, Kanter. Why do we need Theis at such steep price.

He's now more a PF/4 with the current group. You can pair him with any of Kanter/Williams/Poirier since he can work the perimeter on both ends.

He's our best 4, at the moment.

5 million is nothing. They could sign him for 20 million and it would have no bearing on the roster anyway. Theis is the only big on the roster who has shown ability to stretch the floor, I think he's going to get a lot of minutes.

Tacko Fall is most likely going to play zero NBA minutes this year.

I'm dying to see Wanamaker on the floor with Theis and Poirier.

Theis seemed a lot skinnier and quicker his first year here. Then he tore something in his knee and came back looking kinda chubby all of last year. I’m curious to see if he’ll come back a little skinnier and more mobile, or if the added weight was a welcome addition for dealing with 5’s around the league.
