Re: 2019 Bucks Off Season Thread - Trades, Transactions - JR Smith Lands in MKE
if JR is our 14th man that is fine. He is the sort of dude that can come into a game completely cold and bury 4-5 3's quick smart. Every now and then we will need that. if he comes in and bricks 3-4 quickly then you just yank him back out.

I'm with you Frank. JR has heaps to offer, this is a good moveFrank Nova wrote:All JR has to do is go into the situation with a mature attitude and ready to work and everything else is like riding a bike. Don't kid yourself by just being a hater acting like JR isn't a crazy talented player. If he still got some juice he's probably the best SG on our roster. Whats the problem?

We traded 4 #2 for mirotic and last year's deadline and I was more stoked about that than bummed brogdon left. Similar level impact guys in the right system. Same diff. 1 frd and 2 srd plus 85 mill better than 4 srd.paulpressey25 wrote:Ron Swanson wrote:You can still indict the organization for not ponying up the luxury tax in order to keep last year's core together (still on the fence about this), but hopefully this puts all the TPE hand-wringing nonsense to rest.
Personally don't think the luxury tax is the main debate. The main debate is Brogodon. Should they have let him go for what Indy paid him. Good arguments both ways IMO.
I think I'm less salty on it because of those three draft picks. I had assumed that if we let him walk, we were going to reject matching a 4/$100 offer sheet from someone, and have nothing to show for it.
We want another brogdon we got the ammo for one. The next one comes with better contact numbers too

Just keep him off the court in crunch & it'll be gravy.

Give Nehm credit. He asked the question we all wanted answered. They even brought Albert into it.
What I took from Horst's answer was "We worked so damn hard to get Brook and Hill to re-up at the numbers they accepted. Once the Brogdon trade became a reality on Sunday, I wasn't going to open up that can of worms again with their agents for the TPE"
I'm fine with that answer. Brook and Hill could have likely gotten those contracts (or even a little richer) from a number of other teams. Getting those guys to agree was job #1. The TPE was well down the list.
I don't buy that excuse, honestly. We're talking about deferring ~700K, not a reduction, let alone a wholesale restructuring of the contract. You have to have the courage to get on the phone and have a 10 minute chat with those players and convince them that the TPE could net us a key vet down the stretch. I highly doubt they would have balked at that scenario.

If JR is in, we've got 1 2 way and 1 roster spot left. Cam seems like a 16th man type. One of the two needs to be an emergency point guard. Seems fairly likely that one or both of those guys is currently under contract elsewhere, even if it's a NG'd deal.

Weren't two of those four 2nd round picks also like top 55 protected or something? Meaning they are almost worthless.

I just think it is not as easy as that. 700k deferred is not worth 700k now. You'd have to increase the deferred amount to make up for it. Not to mention, if it upsets the players or their agents at all, that is a huge issue. Guys could still back out of signing and go elsewhere. Not saying either of them would, but it is possible. The Bucks have seemed to have taken the stance of not jerking around players, such as just declining Jabari's QO so he could get that deal with the Bulls.

Nah, I don't buy that at all. Deferring it for one season really doesn't impact the value of the dollar in a significant way. I also don't think either one of those guys are going to flip out based on a request from the organization to defer a small percentage of their salary back one year. If they say no, they say no. But you have the respectful conversation, because that's what professionals do when you're trying to build a champion. I'm sure they'd understand that - they're both high-character guys who want a title.
The risk of the conversation is they say no and we proceed without the TPE. The reward is we have a precious asset that we can use to add a quality veteran over the next year. The reward heavily outweighs any risk, IMO.

Depends on how you frame the convo. If you say “we’re going to chop $700k off the offer” and that’s it... yeah, you risk losing the player and pissing off the agent. If you’ve got any type of relationship with the player/agent it’s a pretty easy convo to at least have... “hey, we had this opportunity come up, here’s what it could mean for the championship team we’re trying to build that I know you’re excited to be part of. I know we agreed to X and of course we’ll happily stand by that, but given this opportunity I wanted to see if you’d be willing to work with us to restructure the offer a bit to allow us to take advantage of this and give us a little more ammo to strengthen our championship bid.” Pretty harmless convo unless you don’t have any type of relationship. Hell.... try to split it up between both of them and then you’re only moving around $350k each. Disappointing if they didn’t even try.

Couldn't they have used "unlikely" incentives to make the $700k work too?
Seems like they just wanted to honor the original contracts discussed and not cause a ruckus. Keep back Herb Simon, the nice guy award stays in Milwaukee for the time being.

Might go though beyond nice guy. That free agent 24 hours was nuts. And the Bucks had a massive number of key guys as free agents. If you hesitate with Hill’s agent, and ask to reopen the deal, then maybe another team gets wind and sweeps in with more cash. And the time Horst might have spent doing that may have been needed to lure Wes Matthews. You can only work so many angles.
I’d be more concerned about Lasry being the one to make the deal.

Why would a player agree to lower his contract on a finalized deal? If I was Hill I would counter to fully guarantee the final year. Give an inch, take a foot.
Sucks we lost the TPE, but we saw how important it was to lock our guys back up. This market was crazy.

Y'all hating on JR too much. Guaranteed he becomes a fan favorite, even if we all throw a shoe at the tv every now and then.

I think the Packers fans are spoiled by having Russ Ball run the packers cap for a long time now and that guy is an actual cap genius.
