SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced Friday that they have arrested the alleged “mastermind” behind the shooting of baseball great David Ortiz in an apparent case of mistaken identity.

Police said Víctor Hugo Gómez, was detained in the Caribbean country.

Houston TV station KTRK confirmed Gómez is from Katy, Texas.

Authorities had said last week that they believed Gómez was living in the U.S. and described him as a dangerous fugitive, adding that he was an associate of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel.

He is accused of ordering the killing of his cousin, Sixto David Fernández.

Authorities say hit men confused Ortiz with Fernández during the June 9 shooting at a bar in the capital of Santo Domingo. The two men are friends and were sharing a table.

Carlos Rubio, Gómez’s attorney, did not immediately return a message for comment. However, he posted a seven-minute video on YouTube on Friday in which his client talks about the case.

“I would never do something like this,” Gómez said, adding that he did not try to kill his cousin, “and least of all David, ‘Big Papi.'”

Jake Marisnick slides into home plate with a very hard collision into Angels Catcher Johnathan Lucroy causing him to leave the game with a injury.

MLBPA targets service time manipulation, wants 'meaningful' free agency - Sportsnet.ca

CLEVELAND — The head of the baseball players’ association has detailed the union’s goals during collective bargaining, listing the restoration of a "competitive environment" and "meaningful free agency" as aims.

Baseball’s labour contracts runs until December 2021, but the sides committed last winter to early talks. Thus far, they met once to discuss the scheduling of future meetings.

Union head Tony Clark says his members want to have "getting players something closer to their value as they are producing it," a reference to the structure that has players getting close to the minimum until they have nearly three years of major league service time, when they become eligible for salary arbitration.

He also says the union wants the "best players on the field at all times," a reference to accusations that clubs hold top prospects in the minor leagues to delay their eligibility for salary arbitration and free agency, which requires six years of service.

Clark also has said rebuilding teams that are noncompetitive hurt the industry.

Looked unintentional, just a bad split-second decision...he changed direction because it looked like he thought Lucroy was going to be pulled down the baseline, and shifted inside. Problem being you should almost never do that, because in all but rare cases you're not going to slide down the inside of a catcher.

But if you blow up a catcher, even if that wasn't your intention, you're probably going to get suspended. Two games would seem to reflect that MLB didn't think he set out to do so, either.

Looked like he regretted his decision once he realized how bad he hurt the guy. Charging like that is reckless at best, and intent to injure at worst. Should have been much longer suspension, otherwise players won't err on the side of caution.

Guessing he would have gotten more if not for the late change in direction, which seems like the tip-off that he was trying to avoid him. Unfortunately, he made entirely the wrong change of direction and ended up out of control bearing down on him.

Well, there goes his career. At least he got to enjoy his Tim Raines HOF moment before it ended.
