He rather quietly became an upper-echelon starter. Not bad for a guy acquired for...Vinnie Pestano.

Clevinger's another Driveline guy, for what it's worth.

The JA Happ effect? I dunno if this velocity surge is meant to last.

Do the Jays still have that? Recall Delabar using it, I think. Weighted ball program where you don't actually throw it.

They're generally doing it on their own time in the offseason. They offer a whole range of stuff...workout programs, really sophisticated on-site diagnostics and biomechanical work to tailor pitcher mechanics to increase velocity, spin, correct possible flaws that would lead to injury, etc. It's still an open question as to how well they'll do at the latter (given that they are helping guys tack on a few ticks in many cases), but it's fascinating stuff.

I guess it shouldn't be at this point, but it still surprises me that a private company started introducing this stuff when teams would have had the resources to do so years ago, but that's baseball. We did hire a couple of the Driveline guys to work in our minor league system, however.

Want to know how much baseball's demographics have changed in the past 20 years? Eric Sogard has the fifth-best fWAR total this season among hitters 31 or older. In 1999, 11 hitters aged 31+ managed 5 fWAR, 22 managed 4+. Sogard will need a strong finishing kick to reach 3.5.

5th-best among in his age bracket is good for 58th in the league as a whole.

Does it really matter? Even old people know this team sucks anyways.

And of course Teoscar strikes out to end the inning. Smfh... This guy is so awful. Don't want him near this team next season.

Yeah, that's why I'm pretty relaxed. His K rate continues to come down, and his walk rate is solid (he actually has a 1:1 ratio dating back to late June, at 13.6% apiece...that's very good in both columns). So basically, we're waiting on his power. I am not worried about his power.
