He's not as good as Katz, but Hamm is the most entertaining twitter follower we have nowadays.

I've talked to several stats guys and the problem of torso location being used both to assign closest defender and to ascertain "open" and "guarded" is STILL an issue. They haven't figured out how to resolve it. I don't trust SportVu stuff as far as I can throw it.
That may change at some point but it hasn't yet.
You got names that I can ask this about? Interested in computer vision and this seems like a great spot
Private group chat mostly, but Krishna Narsu's a good one to start with. He's worked with the data some and he has a lot of work out in public, and he talks to a lot of stats guys and quants.
One of my old acquaintances works for a company that does tracking for sports as well, but I don't necessarily want to put his name out there.
i'm familiar with the limitations. and i wouldn't trust the sportsvu stuff to have any sort of precision granularity at this point. however over large seasons long samples i think the errors average out to a certain extent and a guy who doesn't contest shots all that much or a guy who is open most of the time will separate out. similar to +/-.

I feel like open and guarded also aren't all the same. While yes someone was open from 3 but Rudy Gobert was within 8 ft. is a different open shot than if Chris Paul was within 5 ft. There are so many variables, plus the human element could vary that info as well. Its a stat that has its limitations and something I wouldn't put too much value on right now.
I agree over a longer period of time you would get a better sample. I would also categorize the individual that't entering this information. Because, you might be able to find out that scout 1 and coach 2 have different mind sets as to guarded and not guarded and over the longer sample you could identify those projections.

Guarded/open/wide open is based on distance of the nearest defender, it's not based on personnel entering their opinion of the shot.
“If you're getting stops and you're making threes and the other team's not scoring, that's when you're going to see a huge point difference there,” coach Billy Donovan said.

I asked a similar question regarding trading for another young player to develop and play next to Shai. We basically came up with
Kevin Knox
Anfernee Simons
DSJ
Dejounte Murray
Derrick White
Jonathan Isaac
Ntilikina
Rodions Kurucs
Simons please. That boy good and he can stroke it. Perfect fit next to Kid Gilgeous
I like Simons but I don’t think Presti would covet him. He’s not a good defender and too short.
What? Hes 6'4" and practically no one is a good defender at his age/experience level.

I don't personally disagree but I just don't see him as a guy presti wants. I hope I'm wrong. Portland fans say he's needs to improve getting others involved so he's not just a Jamal Crawford type of player. If he's going to be a sg, I think Presti want's someone with the Terrance Ferguson measurables.

I agree with you, but it's less important
A) with Shai
B) if you want him as a Manu scorer.

Russ doesn't look right in a rockets Jersey. With Durant I didn't really notice it looking weird, but with Russ it's just so out of place b

Re: Thunder Offseason Thread Part Deux: Rebuild
Edit-Found it...Presti's comments about Bazley.
We haven't had a chance to talk to you about (indiscernible). What stood out to you about them and what do you see their goals being?
SAM PRESTI: Sure, with Darius, we're really excited about him because he has a couple things that to me make him unique. One, his ability to handle the ball at his size is really, really unique, and defensively he's got great range for a young player at that size, as well. It's going to be a process with him. We'll have to be patient. We understand that. But at that range of the draft, to be able to get a player that has those ball-handling skills at 6'9" or 6'9" plus is pretty unique. And so we felt like that was a good investment to make in the early 20s. Again, like I said before, we have the ability to take a longer view, and we like that challenge of having a player like that in the program.
With Dort, again, he's a player that just has incredible physical gifts and is a potential to be, I think, a really good defender. But he's going to need work and refinement, and I think he's extremely motivated. He's an extremely high-character person. Very humble. I'm excited to see kind of how he progresses through the season. Both of those guys are guys that we're excited about adding to the team.

Fred Katz is part of the Clippersblog crew that all went on to be big time, top notch writers (led by Kevin Arnovitz). They were organic long time Clippers fans that used to have a podcast+live youtube show. He was greeat, I'm sure you guys miss him. I saw he's covering the Wizards for The Athletic now.

I don't know who looks worse, Russ with that hair or Morey with that beard.

so ''unique'' that he tried the best he could to get lower in the draft

Are we allowed to root for Westbrook to get a ring while we rebuild?
I mean, you rooted against Westbrook in OKC every single game so I guess for you it won't change now but some fans still like him

you're free to do whatever you want. it's logical imo for some fans to continue to support westbrook and, by extension, the rockets. i think it's quite hypocritical for anyone to do this if they passed judgment on those who were kevin durant fans and followed the warriors, though.
i just hope he fails and the rockets suck because i'm a thunder fan. not because i don't like westbrook. i'm a fan of james harden and kevin durant as players but i never wanted their teams to win anything, except for glib satisfaction i guess. but that's not my fandom.
by the way. i would have been thrilled had westbrook proven me wrong at every turn.

The Westbrook and Durant exits weren’t even close to the same. It’s so obvious that it doesn’t need to be expounded upon.
