For Washington, Hong Kong has emerged as the latest potential pressure point in the standoff with the world’s second-largest economy. The semi-autonomous entrepôt has been seized this month by massive protests demanding the cancellation of a controversial bill that would allow extradition to the mainland. The local government says the measure is necessary to prevent the former British colony from becoming a haven for fugitives. Detractors counter that Beijing, which resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong in 1997, will simply use the law to arrest dissidents and critics.

As some of you may know, I am from Hong Kong and still living here. Since return of rule from UK to PRC, freedom and a limited level of democracy is failing bit by bit. After demonstration of a million, then two million people marching on Hong Kong Island, the leader appointed by Beijing decides to back track a bit and claiming postponement of making the extradition law.

However, things getting worse last Sunday.

The old trick called "Mob hitting citizens under police's skin", happens. And in the shopping mall and subway station, platform too.



And Police using ultra-violence to hit those who still were in the streets, firing shots with protection of helmets and cardboard shields like below picture.

Matchman, we are all doing our parts. Stay safe and stick to marches where organizers have received permission.

The marches have been amazing, with kids, old people, people in wheelchairs, rich poor. I have never seen HK as United.

I do hope the youngsters stay away from aggressive action as at Legco and in Sheung Wan, as that only tarnishes the movement.

Pretty much agree here, while the mob and the police inviting violence, we would keep doing the opposite.

Agree, to keep us in the global spotlight (safer than not), keep faith and patience without being violent, is really tough.

Luckily until now there is no casualties whatsoever from the march, demonstration or conflict; although the ultra sad part is 4 to 5 youngsters have committed suicide due to hopeless or other related reasons during this campaign.

American interest (businessmen, they have 85k American people living in Hong Kong), as well as other overseas investment in Hong Kong is probably the last defense against any idea for the local government to invite PLA to involve in this matter. At the same time from the Tiananmen massacre Hong Kong people know it better that the CCP cannot be counted as being rational or peaceful to their own people.

HK is the landauromat for China. IMHO they will never send in the PLA and kill the goose that lays the golden egg and gets them much needed US dollars.

Thugs will be used to turn public sentiment against protestors.

Yeah and accompanied by the very well paid and trigger happy cops.

China will get what they want, these protests have little impact in the long run. Maybe Singapore will see an influx of expats that used to call Hong Kong home.

Hurts to see my people - especially the youngstas have to go through this. They ain't stand a chance. We all knew this time was going to come with the wave of people leaving Hong Kong in the 80's and early 90's. Not everyone has the means and opportunity to leave the country, and the youngin's are paying dearly with their lives.

Wasn't so bad with the British. Racist? Hell yeah. Having basic laws and freedoms was great as well.

There is no disputing that HK is a part of China and most protestors are not campaigning for I dependence.

But it's lot more complex. if interested I would recommend d reading up on Hkfp.com. very insightful source on HK overall.

the expectation is that China stick to its agreements for the next 28 years or 2047. A lot can change in 28 years and perhaps there are changes to the Chinese political system during this time.

Things in China are not as stable as is projected by the Media, lots of unrest and strife under the surface. There are strong opposing factions within the CCP including reformers.

The more unstable chinanis, the harder ir will crack down on HK and treat the hk people like uyghur.
