They were selling him so hard on the broadcast for the past 2-3 weeks.

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Cutter: 60 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 40 | Overall: 40

Johnston boosted his Draft stock in the 2016 California Collegiate League, where he showcased the circuit's best arm and shut down the U.S. collegiate national team for six innings in a June start. He began his junior year as a starter before being asked to fill Texas' void at closer and cashing in on his first two save opportunities, but he subsequently lost command of the strike zone and returned to the rotation before going to the Nationals in the sixth round that June. He was used as a starter and reliever in his first full season, faring better in the latter role as he finished the year at Class A Advanced Potomac.

Johnston's fastball and slider both are viewed as plus pitches, giving him an ideal pairing for a long-term bullpen role. His heater registers in the low- to mid-90s, at times bumping higher, with arm-side run and late sinking action that nets him a lot of weakly-hit contact. His slider plays more like a cutter, sitting at 88-90 mph with darting action, and he also has a changeup that could become a serviceable pitch if he uses it more often.

There is a lot of effort in Johnston's inconsistent overhand delivery, and it in turn impedes his ability to throw strikes. But with two big league-caliber pitches, Johnston has the raw ingredients to become an effective reliever at the highest level.

I mean, we've basically added a dude who we think will be in our pen in the next season and longer.

I can't see adding arms as a bad thing.

So this trade looks like a dud, Johnston was pretty awful in A+ for the Jays. Does he get released this winter?

He's only played 3 years in the minors - does he already need to be added to the 40 man in order to keep him??

Not yet. He’s got 1 more year before that.

So I guess you’re saying they’ll keep him for at least 1 more season?

Well yeah, I'd think so.

The return on Johnson was light, to be sure, but the return on David Phelps was surprisingly good if we're going on early returns. Tom Hatch looks like a decent asset, likely one Chicago couldn't see adding to the 40 man roster this winter. Sometimes, that's just the way it goes.
