The Next face of the NBA

Post#1 » by Lebr0nJames » Fri Aug 2, 2019 1:41 pm

Whether people like it or not, we always had a player in every decade who dominated headlines and was the center of attention. The 60s it was Bill Russell and Wilt, 70s, Kareem. 80s Bird and Magic. 90s Jordan. 00s it was between Kobe and Shaq.(A.I would've been had he been surrounded with a good supporting cast.)

Now here we are at the end of the 2010s when headlines were dominated by Lebron James, occasionally Curry mainly in 2016. So who is the face of the league in the future?

Now, some will argue Kawhi has stepped up and became a big star when it comes to media acceptance, especially with the votes and press he got during free agency, fresh off a ship.

Giannis? He could be especially getting a jump shot.

Zion? Too soon to tell but if he lives up to the hype and put up monster stats in his 3rd or 2nd year, he'll defiently be the man who the league will plaster his face or name all over sport networks.

Somebody we don't expect or heard of? Possible. Give me your thoughts as this topic been discussed before but it never really gotten full detail from what I seen by other post similar to this.

Anthony Davis.

He's one of the best players in the league.
He has great charisma during interviews.
He plays in LA now, where majority of media is.

Once Zion is a top 10 player then he will probably be the face.

I think we're finna have another era like the 2000s where there wasn't a face of the NBA.

2010s is LeBron.

2020s is looking like Giannis so far.

It's debatable, but honestly that rivalry really didn't pick up until Shaq/Kobe last year's as a duo. Other than that it was the lakers who beat the Spurs.(99 Spurs won, 2001-2002 Lakers won, 2003 Spurs won, 2004 Lakers won(Shaq last year as a laker.)

Giannis can be great all he wants, he's not a household name nor will he become one in the next decade. I dont think the league would like a foreigner to be the face of the league.
Its either gonna be nobody or Zion if he lives up to the hype and gets pushed by the nba and media as much as possible.

but after the last 8 months or so, people don't like him - plus (and this matters) he's odd looking

I'm not a huge believer in how he projects to the NBA, but Zion is already a superstar, so if he ends up being a perennial All NBA talent, its probably him.

Its not like Curry won't be around for another 5 years though.

Its got to be Giannis. He's still only 24 years old, he's got a likeable personality and a marketable game.

Zion will be pushed as the next face of the league. That process has been manufactured since Jordan left anyway.

Faces of the league (in terms of exposure/media):
50s: Mikan
60s: Wilt and Russell
70s: Kareem
80s: Magic and Bird
90s: MJ
00s: Kobe and Shaq
10s: Lebron
20s: AD and Zion

Davis is odd looking? I don't really get that, seems like a normal human.

Being disliked is half the job of being the face of the NBA.

Well yes,but we couldn't really have a Lakers vs Celtics rivalry between Lakers and Spurs cause they are both in the West and seeding, brackets etc made it harder for the two franchises to face each other with the frequency Bird and Magic teams did.

My point was that the 2000-2009 decade was dominated by Shaq/Kobe and Duncan just like the 1980-1989 decade was by Magic and Bird title wise.

1980-1989

Magic as 1a/1b
5 Championships (1980,1982,1985,1987,1988)
Bird
3 Championships (1981,1984,1986)

Sixers 1 Championship (1983) Pistons 1 Championship (1989)

2000-2009

Shaq
4 Championships (2000,2001,2002,2006)
Kobe
4 Championships (2000,2001,2002,2009)
Duncan
3 Championships (2003,2005,2007)

Pistons 1 Championship (2004) Celtics 1 Championship (2008)

Zion. Maybe the most marketable player we've seen in awhile. Giannis could be the most dominant, but he has said he doesn't want to be the face if he can't be himself.

Embiid and Simmons could be the next young stars to be successful.

Sixers finally have a team that should stay the same throughout the year. Also, a team that fits well together and has depth.
