Steve Starks.

Former Jazz president Steve Starks has been promoted to the chief executive officer of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies, the company announced Wednesday. Starks had been the president of the Jazz and LHM Sports & Entertainment since 2015.

Along with the Jazz, he oversaw Salt Lake City Stars, the Salt Lake Bees, Vivint Smart Home Arena, Megaplex Theaters, the Tour of Utah and the Zone Sports Network.

Don Stirling, an executive vice president of LHM Sports and Entertainment, will become the interim president until Starks’ replacement is found.

“Following a rigorous, national and internal search, it was apparent to the board and the Miller family that Steve has a deep understanding of and commitment to our company’s 40-year heritage, values and culture,” owner Gail Miller said in a statement. “For more than a decade, he has demonstrated strong leadership capabilities as the head of several of our diverse businesses, leading operations and commercial functions, and prioritizing the customer experience and talent development.”

Miller stated that Starks will be responsible for the overall design and execution of the company’s long- and short-term business strategies.

So how will this be different?

Who did he replace? Who will replace him (beyond interim)?

Does it all even really matter to our team?

I think it will only matter to the team if he either does an exceptional job, which will increase the Group's profits so much that the Jazz could afford to spend more money and go into the tax more regularly (or, at all), which is kind of doubtful, or if he does a terrible job which causes lower profits or even losses, which will cause the Jazz to tighten the belt even more. Barring these two outcomes, I don't think it will make that much of a difference from a Jazz perspective.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

I’m sure someone from the inside will be the next team president
