Is this guy a serviceable backup? Thoughts on his game?

Kyle O'Quinn is what happens if you close your eyes and imagine a slowish, solid backup center. He can do a bit of everything that a center is supposed to do. Plays tough. Doesn't hurt you anywhere.

Good pickup.

Not a bad player. He can fill up the stat sheet and pass. Foul trouble pretty often. Actually, I used to get pissed at the FO for playing him so many minutes while we tanked (and of course after he helps us get some meaningless wins, he signs elsewhere).

He also has a great nickname: KOQ. Lots of fun to be had there, if you can be creative.

I thought Kyle did a great job for us. He's an excellent weak side defender/rim protector. Very good passer especially if he develops a little ESP with players who like to cut to the hoop. Good motor. Decent shot. Excellent teammate.

Yes, can be a terrific passer if he's in sync. Fairly skilled. Good backup. Nice guy too

Kyle is a solid player and is great team guy. On the court he tends to disappear for stretches at a time during the season though. But it never seems like he’s not playing hard for some reason. Good pick up always a fan of Kyle.

I attribute KOQ's boneheaded tendencies to the knicks' inept coaching staff. He will fill the stat sheet efficiently at limited minutes. Good backup.

A little overrated by some here. Diminishing returns if you play him too much. Good in limited minutes. He’s decent but not a front end bench guy IMO.

We are going off 2 years ago. I bet he doesn't have much left in the tank but he is 29 which should still be his prime.

He put up better stats here, and was less turnover prone than in Indiana. Was their coaching staff also inept?

you're safe with him playing 10-18 mpg. anything more than that, it might be rough.

What Kyle OQuinn Brings.

Shot Blocking/Rim Protection
Good defense
Leadership/lockeroom presence
Hustle/Grit/Hard work
Rebounding
Money mid range game
Good FT shooter
Has range out to 3 but rarely shoots the 3
very good passer and has good vision. Great at finding backdoor cutters.

Not much lift around the rim when it comes to finishing an offensive rebound or finishing in traffic
Lots of moving screens (Hell legit average at least 1-2 moving screens per game. Frustrating )

Pro's heavily outweight the cons. Hes a slightly undersized backup center who makes up for his lack of size with his strength/grit/hustle and length. Good 15-22 mpg player who will have more good moments then bad. I think he is one of the best backup centers in the league personally. Has the ability to spot start and you wont get hurt too much.

Very good shot blocker and rebounder in limited minutes. Can hit mid ranges pretty consistently, but hasn't been able to stretch out his range to 3. Very good passer for a big as well, though doesn't always make the right decisions with the ball. Plus, his teammates love him, very good locker room guy.

The biggest limiter in his game is his low athleticism, he struggles to defend PnRs and has pretty much no lift. And he has no shot creation on offense. But, you guys really only need him for about 10 or so minutes a game if that, so he should be perfect in that role.
