How do we feel about Buck's suggestion of making Font the closer next year? I think 7th or 8th inning reliever feels more right. I could see it happening though.

Benefit of having quick hands. wait on a slider, slap at a high fastball....crazy good.

Read on Twitter
?

Vladdy hits a breaking off the wall, no wait, Vladdy demolishes a breaking ball like you have never seen before. Count the seconds it usually takes to get to first base(3-4) and he was barely at first before the ball hit the wall. He's actually still rounding first when the throw gets to 2nd. :)

Read on Twitter
?

Vlad sits breaking ball, again! Octavino decides to go with his 2nd best pitch 3 consecutive times and Vladdy fights it off for a triple down the right field line. it's not even fair, the yankees thought after the game.

His splits are weird. Thornton, with a runner on first: .372/.416/.755. Thornton, with runners in scoring position: .229/.309/.323.

Either he's incredibly concerned that guys will steal or it's noise, because with a runner on first the average batter turns into Barry Bonds, whereas with RISP they're closer to Ryan Goins.

Sucks that it ended with a GIDP, but that's still quite an at-bat.

Best 1-0 game in awhile. Good at bats by the young studs at the end.

I think the opposite, that they should make him a starter. He has been an “opener” for I guess about five games now and has done phenomenal yet baseball is so set in its ways that he gets pulled after two innings every single time for fear that there might be a blood moon if he actually goes three or four innings. You won’t know how he will do unless you let him actually try but… Major-league baseball.

Old stoic Major League Baseball using an opener for the first two innings and then pulling him?
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

So why don’t teams use their closer for 3-4 innings a game?

If you’re pitching more than 1-2 innings, you’re no longer an “opener”; you’re a “starter”, and you’re pitching every 5th day like every other starter.

Correct. And I think that font has done enough to deserve that chance. If he gets the opportunity and fails, so what, at least you know.

What has held Font back is that he has two tendencies which are manageable in isolation, but really problematic in tandem: he walks a lot of hitters, and he gives up a tonne of homers. If he could shed one or both tendencies, he could be a starter, or a good multi-inning reliever, but he's a tough pitcher to trust (which is why he's been through so many organizations despite having pretty good stuff).
