I guess they're just doing him a solid.

Not like he had any value, or else he would've been gone at the deadline so I doubt things would've changed much in the offseason.

That's my thought. And playing him even occasionally at SS and 2B wasn't going to help either the rebuild or his career.

They traded Sogard for 2 prospects. Even if they're d level better then nothing but they can't trade Galvis?!?!?!

Two players to be named later. This is Galvis first year with an ops above of .700.

Disappointed they couldnt get anything for him at the deadline.

But they did him a solid to get him playing time and potentially in a playoff race. Goes to show his worth around the league, 15 AL teams passed on him as well as 4 NL teams.

Its surprising but 19 teams passed on taking him for free.

EDIT: I forgot the MLB changed their rules.. Waivers no longer go through one league over the other... It is one overall list. Reds were 11th on the list and you cant include the Jays - so 9 teams passed on Galvis for free.

Galvis is a good defensive SS and clubhouse guy that put up 2+ WAR last year, and on track for another 2+ WAR this season. Plus he has a cheap option for next year.

Very disappointing that they couldn't get anything for him. Poor asset management.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

If no one wanted to trade for him, how the hell is it poor asset management?

Poor Reds trying to make a playoff team when Votto is having his worst season.

Good defensive shortstops with an average bat and cheap option don't grow on trees. They could have received something for him, I'm sure, even it was some A-ball C prospect.

Here's the mlb shorstop rankings right now, for the ones that qualify.

https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2019&month=0&season1=2019&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2019-01-01&enddate=2019-12-31&sort=21,d

Galvis won't even be a significant upgrade on Iglesias for them and they both rank near the bottom.

I guess they do grow on trees.

(1) He hasn't had even an average bat until this season.

(2) Over half the league just passed on taking him for free. That tends to suggest that it's possible nobody was actually offering anything for him at all. I'm sure he could have been traded for a contract that a team wanted less but I'm not so sure legitimate prospects were a particularly good bet to be involved.

Then why did every team in the AL pass up the chance to add him for free??

I mean, I like Galvis and am surprised he doesn’t have a bit more value. However, I don’t think we can sit here and assume we dumped him for free, instead of getting something decent for him, just for the hell of it.

I'm still baffled that Milwaukee didn't want him at the deadline. He wouldn't have cost much, and he's a definite improvement on Arcia.

$5.5m is a lot in free agency nowadays. The Reds might have been the only team who saw that option as a benefit. Otherwise an acquiring team would have to give up an asset and buy him out for a mil after the year. The team option might have actually prevented a deal from happening, otherwise trading him and eating up the rest of his salary might have been doable. Still would have gotten little to nothing back though.
